Oh man did he hunt before this...first dog I have ever shot pointed grouse over at 6 months of age. Covers ground at 150 yard casts and hunts objectives..everything I wanted up to this point. Good news is that so far it is just training birds. Took him to the woods tonight and he still hunted like a...

What a month!
I have had a terrible month! I kept a pup from a litter a year ago...very well bred and this dog has shown me more potential than any one I have ever had. Over the course of the last month, I have managed to set him pack due to lack of paying attention. The dog loves birds to death and likes to poin...

Re: Touching a dog while on point?
No touching on wild birds during training but I have been known to touch em with planted birds and the pup on the checkcord. I like to kneel reel in the slack and kneel down beside the dog. I will then lightly push forward on their rumps...two things could happen: 1. They hold and push back a bit. 2...

In my experience, as a woodcock bander, woodcock do put out scent while nesting.
On Saturday my "go to" dog set a hen and when I walked up on him, he was only 3 feet from the bird staring the hen down, so there may be some validity to the theory...something to look for this spring.

Take the chase out of em and you have most of the battle won...they will start pointing then.

Whoa break the dog, including overlaying the e-collar...this could take time depending on the age of the dog because you don't want to rush the collar with a young dog. When the dog is broke in the yard with the collar overlaid, then go to the field with launchers and take the chase out of the dog. ...

Depends on what I am working on...I usually trap some "wild" ones when I need them and throw them in the coop when I need them...they are disposable and seem to fly real strong.

Ignore him...If he paws, ignore it, if he sits, stand next to him and crowd him...he'll stand.
in the long run...birds will fix all and I don't think the dog will "sit" on live birds if he is from quality breeding...build the prey drive.

One thing I like to do is only shoot every so often to keep the dog honest. Maybe one or two over the course of a week IMO.
Shooting too many birds in training makes the dog think that he/she is always going to get the bird...then they start cheating.

How long are you leaving the collar on the dog?
I have only experienced this once and it was on a week long hunt in SD 8 years ago where I had the collar on the dog all during the hunting day for 5 days of hunting.

I looked at the LCS case but it lloks kind of flimsy and the Garmin case for the GPS 60CSX looks like it wont fit the 220 due to the antenna.
