There's a lot of fine GWP and DD breeders in your neck of the woods. I do a lot of the same hunting you do including limited duck and geese and I really like the DD. It's really a subjective thing. Like the old saying goes, " A good dogs a good dog, no matter the color or breed".

Dog's love their crates; it's their security blanket, their cave. If mine get bored during the day, I'll generally find them asleep in their crates. How long? She's still a baby. Now you have to let her out when her kidneys give out. Later on you can leave her in for over 8 hours. I once heard that ...

I like concrete. Easy to clean and sanitary. Your dog isn't on it continually so no foot problems. I had pea gravel once and didn't like it. After a while the urine smell got bad. You could clean the top but the urine soaked through to the bottom. Never again.

Gone hunting, I guess I am confused but if the dog comes to you and sits or whatever in front of you is that not when you take the bird from it? And if you do he won't have the bird when he finishes by walking around you. At least that would be the way I would see it. So if you really want the dog ...

I suspect in this case, all he's going to do is expose the dogs to a ton of birds, give her some basic "whoa" work, and send the dog home. He really couldn't do much else in a few weeks. I believe that it is generally a training breakdown. It can also be a dog that is just a marginal animal. If the dog is brilliant one day and a dolt the next, it's the training. If he never has a brilliant day, it's the dog or the dog and the training.

There's a lot of differing opinion on whether to teach sit, down, etc. Many of the people today train a pointer just like any other dog. If it's to live in the house, it has to sit when told, lie down, come, etc. They may sit to point in training but you just teach them to stand up. On wild birds th...
