Dog's love their crates; it's their security blanket, their cave. If mine get bored during the day, I'll generally find them asleep in their crates. How long? She's still a baby. Now you have to let her out when her kidneys give out. Later on you can leave her in for over 8 hours. I once heard that ...

Casper; then you've been around electricity for too long. I put my fingers on the prongs of a collar. With a TT Pro 500 I can go up to 4 low before it gets uncomfortable; and that's all it is. Uncomfortable. Each dog's electrical tolerance is different and each collar is different. Back in the 70's ...

Hey folks, dont get me wrong, that is my feelings after watching the ecollar used by pro. When the dog cries it is hurting. I have been trained to use the ecollar by the two pro trainers I have worked with. I have been taught to get control of the dog. When you have control you dont need the ecolla...

Gone hunting, I guess I am confused but if the dog comes to you and sits or whatever in front of you is that not when you take the bird from it? And if you do he won't have the bird when he finishes by walking around you. At least that would be the way I would see it. So if you really want the dog ...

I'm sorry; I was in a hurry when I wrote about sitting in front. Some obedience classes I have seen teach to call a dog to heel, and first stop and sit in front of the handler facing the handler. Then to finish the heel, the dog walks to the handlers right side, then behind him, and sits on the left...

"Intensive Training" can mean different things for different trainers. I suspect in this case, all he's going to do is expose the dogs to a ton of birds, give her some basic "whoa" work, and send the dog home. He really couldn't do much else in a few weeks. I'm a little different than some of the ot...

Gauge Mate Gold Adapters work Great IF you use premium shells with them. By using either AA'S of Rem. STS they will not stick in the adapters and you can pull them out as fast as if using regular ejectors. Same with any PREMIUM hunting load. But if you're going to shoot the cheapie Rem. or Win. load...

There's a lot of differing opinion on whether to teach sit, down, etc. Many of the people today train a pointer just like any other dog. If it's to live in the house, it has to sit when told, lie down, come, etc. They may sit to point in training but you just teach them to stand up. On wild birds th...

Don't let the pup train you. Chewing on anything is a no-no. 30" of exercise is enough if it's REAL exercise. By this I mean, running along side a bike or in harness, not just a walk on a leash. Even though he's just a babe, you've got to put some controls on him if he's to be a house dog. No barkin...

It doesn't matter whether or not she's obsessed with birds, it's time to put some strict obedience into her. Try using a heeling stick while you walk her around the neighborhood. Walk her at heel on lead and whenever she seems inattentive, tap her chest and command heel; or immediately change direct...

Yes, you are correct. As I understand the problem, when you try to program them for other collars, something goes wrong, the user can't reprogram them, and they have to be sent back to TT. I still use my old two dog 500 and have never had a problem.Wagonmaster wrote:If you are talking about the G3 ecollar

Re: 6 mth old GSP roughing up the Cat
I want to know if my baby is too young to be introduced to an ecollar? She is getting hard headed when it comes to rough housing the cat. Used to we could yell "no" and show her the rolled up newspaper while she was pointing the cat and stop her from pouncing. Now when she goes on point and we yell...

My dogs love to retrieve, and I would not deny them that pleasure after finding and handling the bird properly. I don’t believe a retriever has a better nose for downed birds than a pointer, especially the versatile breeds that will put their noses to the ground. They are great trackers as well of ...

Hunt the heavy cover (cattails, etc) with the dogs. The heavier cover you hunt, the better the birds will hold. Hunting wild birds will not harm your dogs, it will teach them. Decide before you go how you will be handling running birds; do you want them to hold point until they are released to reloc...

The more birds you can expose him to, the happier he should be. Take a pigeon, clip one wing, and let him retrieve it. I don't think anything builds more drive into a dog than actually retrieving a bird rather than just chasing. I thought I wasn't suppose to let him catch anything this early in the...

Gonehuntin' Your method will work wonders if you want a robot or a dog that will do everything you tell it. But most of us that have pointing dogs just don't want that. Retreivers are supposed to be in control at all times so early training like you suggest is good. But I want a dog that can think ...

I don't think you lose a thing in a dog by starting them young. Until they're 6 months they always run with a check cord on and are always on a leash around the yard. At 6-7 months I obedience train them: here, sit, down, heel. At 9-10 months I ff them. Now, all of this time they've been working bir...
