Belle's new Sister - ANKA

Thought I would post a pic of Belle's new Sister - ANKA - Purchased from Mike in Georgia. ANKA was listed on this forum by Mike. Thanks to Mike for helping me understand the DD's , the testing system, etc. I know I will enjoy learning more about the breed and what they are capable of. I have been pr...

Re: Lady "Belle" and the Lake

Thought I would add a pic of Belle's new swimming partner. Purchased yesterday from Mike. She was listed on this forum. Thanks to Mike for educating me on DD's. I will have fun learning the whole testing system and more versatility work. I have primarily been an upland bird dog person in the past.

Re: Lady "Belle" and the Lake

Recon, Belle didn't much want to go in after things thrown either. I believe it was fear because she had not swam. At the NAVHDA training day I let her watch other dogs chase ducks, then she got a turn to chase the duck you see in the picture. Since that time she has liked the water. I am sure yours...

Lady "Belle" and the Lake

Took Belle , one year old GSP pup, to the lake this morning. Did some trails by the lake and then down to the water. Throw the stick, Belle swims and brings it back - good dog. Hmmm, maybe we should make it a little tougher. Sit, down, stay - throw stick - wait ...... "okay"..... Belle swims, gets s...

Re: Any runners ?

I take my 10 month old GSP with me 2-3 days a week and we run two or three miles. She used to tire at about 1.5 miles but she did not the last time we ran. We run between a 9 and 10 minute mile. Not fast but a good cardio workout for us both.

If your in a bad mood - don't start the training. No good will come from taking out your frustrations during a training session.

Tennessee NAVHDA training session - 6-25-11

Thought I would take a moment to thank people that attended the NAVHDA training session in Morrison Tn. today. I had not been to a NAVHDA training day before and appreciated the help I received. We all now know that "Belle" can swim. LOL.... Seems like having a duck in front of her was ample motivat...

Steady to wing and shot training session. Yahoo

Thought I would share that I had a great session with Belle tonight. She is a 10 month old GSP. She hit the "planted" quail hard, stood through attempted flush, and bird walking out, and then stood to the flush and blank pistol shot. Held while I walked back to her and told her to fetch. I thought i...

Re: NEED HELP WITH LAUNCHERS...

George Hickox recommends planting a "scent bird" for the dog to point and then put the trap several yards away from the scent bird. This helps avoid the potential problem of the trap scaring the dog and will give the dog better scent than the bird in the trap will. I had them point the trap for year...

Thanks to all for your posts / suggestions on my GSP learning how to swim. I will keep taking her to the water this summer and may try the cabelas vest if she needs more help. The video was great.

Re: Carding, etc pigeons

You can buy ready made pidgeon "cords" from training supply catalog that will make it easy for you. I would tell you the know if I knew how to explain it in writing. Sorry, but I can't figure out how to explain the way I use a loop and circle it back over itself. See what I mean, doesn't make sense ...

GSP - Not a natural good swimmer - yet?

My GSP pup (9 months) is fine with going in the water, and will attempt to go get something I throw close to the shore. She pounds the water with her front feet but has not learned how to relax and swim with her front feet under the water. Anything I can do to help her or is it just a matter of cont...

Re: Viszla Help! (Won't stop barking and collars don't work)

I hook my GSP up and take her for a 2-3 mile run with me. Wears us both out. If we go by people, dogs, cars, etc. and she tries to leave my side I just keep running and she must follow at my side. I don't keep telling her to heal, I told her once when we started the run. This provides time together,...

You can beat, or shock, a dog into compliance. It takes patience in
training to achieve superior performance.

Nice training pics. When I saw the reference to Fancy White Trash it got me to looking at breeding. The Grandsire of my pup "Belle" is out of General Norman and Fancy's Wild Child. On a side note, I competed against both Fancy White Trash and Hailey Von Firthorn. Dan Scully owned Haily but Harold , ...

Re: Steadying to wing and shot

Thanks for the responses. In answer to some questions: Belle is a German Shorthaired Pointer. I have a good amount of training experience, having raised and trained many, many dogs over the past 30 years. Having said that, each dog is different and I will always have a lot to learn. As an example, B...

Steadying to wing and shot

Well, Stoney's Southern Belle, aka Belle, stood her pidgeons on flush the last three sessions. Had her point a scent bird today and launched pidgeons out of traps. She stood to the flush with me out in front. Guess I will introduce the blank gun next. I may go back to work doing some consulting work...

Back dog for new member

It will take me awhile to learn the website but I look forward to sharing information, and learning from those on this site. I have had bird dogs for a number of years, and many different breeds. I recently retired and am now able to get back into bird dogs. I picked up a GSP last fall who is now 9 ...
