I carry an old insulated water jug my wife picked up at a garage sale.Since it's insulated it doesn't freeze up as quick in cold weather.

Sounds like the dog is self hunting,not hunting for the gun.I would work him on some planted birds.If he points them solid kill them over him.Get's them thinking if they hunt for you they will find birds and get some action.As you mentioned the dog is not real solid,and he will come across some bird...

I understand a big running dog can be trained to hold point all day,but I've never seen anybody be able to train a wild pheasant to hold FOR that point all day.I prefer a medium range dog at most. I have heard of guys purposely wanting the runt of the litter,thought they made better dogs.Don't know if there is anything to it though.I got to hunt with a runt gsp one time,his mouth wasn't hardly big enough to pack a pheasant but he sure did some nice bird work.

I don't believe our quail numbers are as bad as predicted.I haven't had a dry run yet,and all the coveys I have found have been nice big coveys.I do believe pheasant numbers are down though.

A good rule of thumb for me is what comes out of the other end of the dog,if the dog makes small firm piles I know he is absorbing the food,if he is making big soft piles it tells me that there is alot of junk in the food his body is not obsorbing.

Here are a couple of options-a good gun smith can tap it for choke tubes,or he can also hone the last inch or so of the barrel to the choke you prefer.

If the price of dog food keeps going up,I may seriously look at feeding a meat diet. 8 yrs. ago I was giving $14 for 50 lbs. of Diamond green bag,now I'm giving over $22 for 40 lbs.

There will always be exceptions to the rule.there are a few dogs out there that surf and tapdance too.If dogs were naturally attracted to grains,you wouldn't come upon these starving dogs that people dump in the country,they would be living the good life eating out of the corn fields.

We used some tennesee reds on our training area one year,of course some got loose.We found them with the wild bobwhite coveys that lived close by later that year during hunting season. You could pick them out on the covey rise as they are a lot darker color.

I hunted with a double trigger sxs for a couple of years,it wasn't for me.Neither trigger can be in the optimal location on a double trigger gun.It always felt to me that one was too far forward and the other too far back.I'm sure many people get used to it,but I didn't care for it.

Depends upon whether you're a wingshooter or a body shooter. Those pheasants go down pretty easily when hit in the wing. For training young dogs I like to flush pheasants out of tall grass or cattails but shoot them in the wing or leg over an adjacent mowed field. Cripples that a young dog can see ...
