Re: Excitement on "break"
When you release her and she gets excited and starts jumping around, or up on them, IMMEDIATELY command NO! and down her. It takes work and consistency and like Steve said, she's young, but at 18 months she's getting up there to behave that badly.

Re: Do you always stay with the same breed?
I guess I've owned a ton of breeds, from hounds to DD's which I have now. I have no favorites. It depends on what game I'm intrigued hunting. I've run bassets and beagles on bunnies, walkers on fox and coyote, blue tick on coon, Lab's on waterfowl, Setters on grouse and DD's on all birds. Since I hu...

Re: Excitement on "break"
Especially with Lab's, exercise really doesn't matter but discipline does. These dog's do what you allow them to do. If you allow them to get excited and spin circles they will. If you don't they won't. It's all just a matter of obedience. Perhaps put a small 4x6 rug on the floor and make the dog la...

Notice that grip carefully. That grip does a third very important thing: It makes it impossible for the dog to bite you. He can neither turn in nor out to bite. Personally, I never like the collar tang to pinch the ear against. You sometimes, with some dog's, have to use too much pressure on it. I p...

SMART FETCH IS THE BIBLE. Every other method of FF was derived from this one, which is really the one Rex Carr perfected. Force is force, but the dog MUST understand it. Really, you have answered your own question. Great water dog's aren't made in a bath tub. Usually, it's a question of exposure to water so the dog becomes comfortable in it. There are a couple of parts to this. One, some dog's will just NEVER JUMP into the water. They run in, but they won't jump. Yo...

Re: Percent of wild pheasants that hold?
I hunt heavily pressured birds on public land, so take it for what it's worth. First, I think it is very dependent on terrain and how far your dog stands off them. Of course, the further away they point,(like a grouse dog), the more likely it is you'll never find that bird to flush it; he'll run 100...

That's exactly how I handled it. Sat them to the whistle until I caught up. If you have a great handling dog, like a lab that takes whistles and hand signals, you can sometimes handle the dog AROUND the bird, then whistle it back to you. I have to tell you in all honesty, this didn't work well for m...

I never, at any age, take my dog's anywhere there's a lot of dog's. Dog parks are the worst. If you have a bird dog, you MUST have access to land around you somewhere. When I was training, and if a dog had a problem when it went home, nearly 100% of the time it was the OWNERS fault and not the dog's. If the lip pinch didn't work, you didn't do it hard enough. Slapping on the nose causes hand shyness and teaches nothing. Blowing in the ear can get your face bit. So can the flank pinch. I hate getting bit.
