Re: Recommended Training/Tracking Collars
200i (Garmin) is the BOMB! They fixed all of the issues the 200 had and now, as a combined tracking and training collar, I don't believe there is another out there it's equal or close to it. You can even add SOS to it if you're injured. Truly a phenomenal collar and very easy to use.

Yes, I went with the Garmin Pro 550+. It has 18 levels of stimulation and I can't see why she wouldn't flinch at the shock. She definitely feels the electric fence when she runs under it.🤔 BTW, this is my setter I'm dealing with in this thread, CJ. Her coat is not long and I wouldn't say it's abnor...

I think it's the way you have it on BUT there are dogs that are very electrically tolerant. I once trained a lab (turned out to be one of my favorite dog's I've owned) that had such a high threshold that you could set the collar on it's highest setting and he'd cock his head, sit, and scratch his ne...

Steve, all you really need is a check cord and a whistle. We just used to walk them through the field on a CC. Blow two short, sharp tweets and change direction with a soft tug on the CC. Pretty soon they get the hang of it and actually like it if they aren't abused doing it. Soon, you don't need th...

Flushing dogs, which yours is, are easy. You can EASILY hunt him if you do ONE basic thing with him: Teach him unflinching, unyielding, obedience. HERE means HERE. Right now, right here. If a dog comes when you call it, anytime, anyplace, anywhere, that dog is huntable and will do better than 75% of...

I'm a stickler for the HERE command. I want them to come when I command anytime, anyplace, anywhere. Your dog is old enough to learn that. Teach it with distractions and not in the training field. He should be proofed before you turn him loose on birds.

Your dog IS retrieving and carrying, just not delivering. Setters can be a bit difficult because some are so soft. In your case I would do a regular FF program and I still recommend Evan Grahams. It is the bible on FF. You want to remember this: EVERY dog can go through the identical training progra...

10 levels is MORE than enough to train any dog on the planet. Test it on yourself to see response time. Set it on one or two, put two prongs on two finger tips, and hit the button. Better yet, ask your wife to hit the button; she'll be only too glad to. Hint: don't let her control the stim level you...

They are never too old to train HOWEVER, some GSP's just plain hate to retrieve. They will die before they will retrieve a bird. They're all different and you won't know until the dog is evaluated. In general, if she relieves thrown bumpers she is showing you she does have the propensity to retrieve...

A tower shoot is not like normal hunting in that the dog can get a hundred retrieves, one after the other. Two problems may arise: 1). That's a lot of work for a little dog and she may stop delivering to hand. Grab a bird, start in, drop it, run for another one, drop it, and head for yet another. Th...

You'll have to be content with evaluating dog's by their NAVHDA scores. It's a whole different world that Lab's. For instance in Lab's, you may have proven crosses like, say, Honcho to a Thunderhead female. Sorry for the dated sires and dam's, but I've been out of field trialing a long time. What yo...

So it sounds like there are possibly two things going on here and they are related. Tough to say without seeing the dog, but here goes. First, he is shy around strangers. The fact that he is shy also contributes to an aversion to loud and sudden noise. I had a field trial dog like this once and I ha...

That perfection vid is a nice one and directly addresses your problem from 30 minutes on. If a dog is birdy I will NEVER let one chase and I do it just a bit different than perfection. Do NOT use multiple programs. They many times conflict with each other. Pick ONE program and stay with it. I think EVERY dog can be trained to have an "off" switch, if there is indeed, such a thing. It's called obedience. If you don't let a dog be a rowdy, undisciplined animal in the house they won't be. I WON'T own a dog unless it's a house dog. They live IN THE HOUSE WITH ME 100% of the time. I've live...

What your dog is doing is called "popping" on a retrieve. Sounds like the dog has been forced to a pile with the collar since you're nicking it on fetch in the water. I would NOT nick on the fetch command or the word fetch will lose it's power, plus when the dog doesn't complete the task successfull...

IMO there is absolutely no circumstance where a pup should use it's teeth in an interaction with a human. If a 9 week old pup requires a third correction then I haven't done the first two properly. You should train using a retriever program if you want to run blinds with the dog. You can either teach a swim by or simply use angle decheats to train her. If you want a flying entry, you won't get a straight line.

Shags gave you the correct answer (I didn't read the rest). When the dog is 100 yards out zap him THEN recall him. Do it in an open field. Don't let him rely on a recall FIRST. Make him think about where he is. That's why you want an open field, so you can see him and he can see you. Don't go back i...

V dog's can start later than, say, setters. Just be patient. V dog's can be a handful. Their prey drive can surpass the desire to point on some of them. See what develops but I won't let them keep busting birds after they are six months old, and a dog like that I will NOT let them keep chasing.
