Re: Black Bear encounters when training?
I wouldn't worry about it. Just prepare for it. We have tons of black bears, plenty of grizzlies and LOTS of lions. I've hiked in this country for years with non-hunting dogs and never had an issue with bears/lions/dogs. The dogs in my experience (obviously not ones bred to chase) were fairly leery ...

Carried one of two .20 gauge Ithaca SKB Model 100s for 45 years. Just recently bought a Beretta .20 gauge 486 Parallelo. We'll see...didn't sell the SKBs!

Re: Bismuth shot and guage selection
Might be a good idea to pattern your gun as well. The rule of thumb (with steel) is to step up a shot size or so (using 6 shot in lead? go to 4) and keep the chokes open. My info also says that because of the hardness of steel its better in most guns (for sure sxs and o/u) to stay away from full and...

Travis - You might want to post this as a separate, stand alone thread - you will more likely get the kind of info you are looking for. Sorry I have nothing to offer!

You probably just started them too early. Or maybe made the lessons too long.ddoyle wrote:I just read the title...I want to say all my dogs were crappy at fencing? I couldn't get them to keep the foil in their paws!

Re: Duck
For ducks the size of mallards 1) First pluck them - don't skin! They'll dry out 2) Rub with olive oil, season with salt/pepper. A little lemon in the cavity will take care of any strong taste there 3) Heat your oven or grill as hot as it will get - at least 550 degrees and higher is better 4) Place...

Re: fencing and wild birds
Thanks for all your thoughtful advice! It seems obvious that 1) I'll be just fine using wild birds for training if I don't expect too much "style" from my meat dog or expect it to compete in competition. 2) Bird dogs get in trouble when alone and secure confinement of some sort is the only appropria...

fencing and wild birds
Hi All - New here - seems like a lot of great collective experience. Two questions and some background to go with them. 1) I am a soon to be newbie setter owner with no experience training bird dogs. My pup is coming from great lines and I have hunted over her mother so I have an idea what I'm getti...
