Re: Who's Gonna Be First?

yea grouse woods would be tough on it .
however for pheasants I could see some real good footage coming from it.

at some point I'd like to get a gopro set up and record some of our hunts ,
I just think i'll be a more stable filming platform then the back of my dog

Re: VIDEO: Handling in the Field

the rare thing I noticed from the video is that silence is a virtue..
most handlers I've seen spend the whole time yelling and blowing whistles at their "trained" dogs.

Re: Running dog on wild birds???

Collar condition to "here", then take him to the woods. Wild birds will do all the teaching. Shut your mouth, lose the whistle, and let the birds make him into a huting dog. Your pigeon launchers, planted birds, and check cord are there to substitute for what a dog chasing wild birds can do. The bi...

Re: Proofing a Steady Dog

as an owner of a young griff I have to say my griff sat a few times early on once she realized this was something I was not fond of, she stopped. it didn't take an e collar ,just re standing her once or twice. basically the griff in the video is sitting because the owner doesn't care if it sits or not

Re: First time trainer looking for tips

I commend people who want to train their own dog. but if you never trained a dog before its not always the best way to go. even with all the books a DVDs out their ,its not the same as spending a night at the holiday inn express  I'm also not a fan of sending your dog off to learn to hunt with...

Re: Dogs and Boats.

my dog will only go on grass
when I need her to be able to do her business and there's no grass around I throw down a piece of astro turf
18"x24" or so
not green carpet type ,,you want the kind that is grassy looking

Re: Difference in steady to flush and steady to shot

that's the difference between trialing and hunting ... i'll allow a step horizontally or backwards .as long as its to sight where the bird is going. I let her release on shot to improve the chances of recovering cripples.. if I do miss she will break off and return on command ,making sure to give me...

Re: Difference in steady to flush and steady to shot

I pretty much did both steady to flush and steady to shot at the same time . waiting is waiting to the dog. however since my dog is strictly for hunting ,no trialing or testing ,I let her break to retrieve on the shot. I also let her reposition herself on flush to maintain a sight lock on the flushe...

Re: 9mo old pup "laying down" when scenting birds.

we had a self taught irish setter "set" when it found birds.
was never a problem to hunt over.

it all depends on what you want or find acceptable.
in the states a dog setting will be looked down upon
but over seas in many places they are expected to do this

Re: Totally Lost...

not just the dog needs to be sent to the trainer....

find a trainer that works both you and your dog
its a partnership and BOTH of you need to know what your doing in order to make it work

Re: Garmin Alpha

I run an alpha unit . all in all I like the unit but it does have a steep learning curve. one thing I found is the collar unit needs a satellite signal to function. so if you want to desk top tinker with the e collar functions you need to go outside. another thing I found is the training buttons hav...
