Ezzy, I agree that proper conditioning is the best thing for maintaining energy in the field. I have never given any energy supplements or snacks while in the field. That's why I was curious if anybody has truly noticed a difference when doing so.

I agree, put the bell on and ignore the dog. Let him wear it around the house, in the yard, on walks, etc. Let him have good experiences with the bell on. If you can, get him out for some training and bird exposure with the bell before you hunt him with the bell on. He will adjust just fine.

I started with my uncle's springer. My first dog was a vizsla and I currently own two. My next one will be a pointer. There is something about the white dog with a tail, although I will always have a vizsla in the pack. If I ever switched to a flushing breed it would be a springer.

The quail will be much cheaper than the chukars. I keep quail and pigeons. I have found that the pigeons always fly good. In my experience, the quail need a decent pen to remain good flyers. This can be important with a younger, inexperienced dog.

I am not familiar with bestgundog.com, however, I have reservations about something that talks about secret methods and has a website that is riddled with spelling and capitalization errors. Perfect Start/Perfect Finish and the Hickox DVD's are quite popular and their methods are followed by many.

Judy Baumgartner from Kiel, WI is competing an IRWS in AKC MH. It was the first IRWS to obtain a SH title. She has several dual type IRWS dogs, one of which was best of breed at Westminster in 2011. It was the only best of breed in all of the sporting group that had any field titles.
