Help this long time owner of vizslas. The next addition to my pack will be a dog with a white body and long tail. I don't want a pissing match on which line of pointers is the best. Husker, like any breed, if you are looking for a hunting dog, with a few exceptions, your closest thing to a guarantee is to get one from generations of proven hunting and trial lines. The Hickox and Smith seminars are great (and a little spendy). But to get your feet wet and save a few bucks, consider a seminar by Bruce Minard of Hi Five Kennels. Everybody is partial to their breed. Like Brazo, I accidentally ended up with a vizsla nearly 14 years ago and have had them since, and couldn't be happier. From proper breeding (like all breeds), they will be great in the field as well as in the home. You mentioned that you hunt waterfowl, so a viz...

It is not uncommon for dogs to have problems when switching from liberated birds to wild birds. Give him time. If he is bumping the wild birds, it is important to not reward him and let the bird go without shooting it. With time and experience he will learn to stop on first scent on the wild birds. ...

I agree, put the bell on and ignore the dog. Let him wear it around the house, in the yard, on walks, etc. Let him have good experiences with the bell on. If you can, get him out for some training and bird exposure with the bell before you hunt him with the bell on. He will adjust just fine.

I started with my uncle's springer. My first dog was a vizsla and I currently own two. My next one will be a pointer. There is something about the white dog with a tail, although I will always have a vizsla in the pack. If I ever switched to a flushing breed it would be a springer.

I also do not allow a retrieve on every bird in training and when I do, it is only when the dog has remained totally steady. You may also try more than one bird off of the point. Have a second or even third bird in launchers and after the first is flushed and shot, continue working the area and laun...

The quail will be much cheaper than the chukars. I keep quail and pigeons. I have found that the pigeons always fly good. In my experience, the quail need a decent pen to remain good flyers. This can be important with a younger, inexperienced dog.
