Have you tried using a grinder to trim the nail some nails are brittle and can crack when cut? Even though the dog is big the both of you can handle the dog make it a bonding experience. Also there are some good UV glues that could seal the cracked nail.

Mine was treated for ear infection after the second seizure It may have come back but I see no signs like before ( heavy head shaking ) I have an appointment in about 2 weeks I will talk over my options with the Vet then.
