Gun shy rescue GSP
Well my 2 1/2 year old rescue GSP has turned out to be gunshy. He seemed okay when I shot a grouse out of a tree when he was a bout 50 yards away he came over and pointed the dead bird and retrieved it. But as I shot more birds over points he got more scared. He does not panic just shuts down and st...

Good on You. Nice that you got papers for him. We never got any with our rescue and I have times that I am sure he is crossed with a rock.

Re: Bought a new GSP but trainer wants more $$ for papers
Years ago I had to get CKC to track down a breeder to get a the papers registered. They were not happy that she sold the litter as CKC registered but completed the process.

Those are all good points and I will give them all a lot of thought. Arrow the old female has always been the defender of the farm and has never bit either of us she has nipped a few strangers over her nine years. I wonder if all the screaming reminded her of the time the coyotes attacked/killed Kal...

Today I had my 2 year old refuse to come back and get in the boat he knows the Here command and responds 90% of the time. How does he respond to retrieving in the house or along the narrow side of the house? He is young but they learn lots at that age. Just take your time.

Re: Gun now? Or wait?
I did mine at feeding time far away and watched for any flinching. Only 3 or 4 shots with cap gun. As she was more relaxed at feeding I moved closer. This took months. I know this sounds off the wall but I would start my Tiller and put in away from house 100 yards fast idle. Every day we would walk...

Use the hallway retrieve it seems to work the best. And when it gets time to work him on dead birds if he drops it never pick up the bird ; just walk away and say nothing they have an amazing memory If you go pick up the bird for them they will expect it from that point on. Even if you have to leave...

Bark collars / Fence collars? Do any of these have a warning sound function built in? The reason I ask is the new 2 year old Dog is sitting when I turn on his beeper I have it covered up to mute it. I don't have a history of his training as he is a rescue but am thinking he had a bark collar on in o...

Re: get dog to load up in suv
I agree with starting with the kennel on the ground. After the dog is comfortable with that, back your vehicle in a ditch where the dog doesn't have as far up to jump. After it is comfortable there, move the vehicle so it has to jump a little higher---keep doing that until it has to jump the full h...

Re: Do you really know??
No not really but you have to pick one.
I picked one pup because he was the one with the stick in his mouth keeping it away from his mates, Best GSP I ever had he would dive for ducks and bust the bush with the best of them. Some time things just work out.

Re: Bumpers
Drop by your local fire hall with the pup and ask for an old section of fire hose they should have lots hanging about. A 6' section should be plenty; cut off about a 8" (or 5" for a pup) section use shoe goop to seal the ends after filling it with wine corks or wood chips or foam chips. I use a vise...

Adjustment time
How long does it usually take for a 2 year old dog to fully adjust to a new trainers facility (home)? The reason I ask is I have taken on a 2 year old GSP rescue and the first week he seemed very skittish. Now after 2 more weeks he is bolder but still a bit on edge to loud unexpected sounds. The way...

Praise when you hear him bark, could take a very long time, if at all to come out of it. Bark collars
I have just picked up a 2 year old male GSP Rescue dog. I have notice he does not bark I presume one of his 4 previous homes had a bark collar on him. If the pup continues this in the field use it as an opportunity to teach the command "Leave It" I had a GSP the loved Bush Wrens she would never leave them, so eventually a mild shock combined with "Leave It" she would get the message for the day but she never lost the want to point/chase the Wrens....

I have used them on the one GSP that works closer the 2 that ranged farther got the Beepers. They work fine, if you have good hearing I liked the Bear bells they don't fill up with snow. Just remember to sew up the velcro or it will fall off in the thick stuff.
