Re: Last weekend for Woodcock

Willie T, Great pictures. Glad to hear someone else likes hunting Doodles. I have hunted them in the upper Midwest, but would like to hunt them in Louisiana or Mississippi. Exploring new country with a good dog scratches an itch that nothing else scratches Grouseman. Good luck to you and your dog(s).

Re: Most common pointing breed

The English pointer quail dog is alive and well here in Texas. Big running bird dogs that stand up to heat do well down here. Next most popular is probably German Shorthair Pointer and Britney Spaniel.

Re: 4 month old training issues

Thanks for bringing me up to speed Garrison. I’ve never seen a pointing dog that didn’t chase as a puppy and I will leave it at that. To the OP. They come here born with both the chase and the point already in them. Your job is to help them balance the point with the chase. Some dogs have more natur...

Re: 4 month old training issues

I guess I do it a little different than some. My pups don't even SEE a bird until they are 6-8 months old, and then only in a VERY controlled situation. I start doing heel/whoa drills in the yard when the pup is about 16 weeks old. I use a "pigging string", which is a poor man's version of the Smit...

Re: Encouraging Natural Retrieve

What most call a natural retrieve is a basic trained retrieve, without force fetch. Simplify and set your pup up to succeed. Stoking desire for a natural retrieve is fanning the dogs instinct. Shaping the natural retrieve is done with obedience. Obedience sessions in the yard away from birds is wher...

Re: Hi New to the Board

Hi, I am a long time labrador field trialer and dachshund trainer for upland, waterfowl, tracking. Two labs passed this last year and my remaining dachshund is 18yr. Time for a new pup. Looking at a GWP that will I've up to its 'versatile' moniker. Looking at litter on the Wirehair Alliance form an...

Re: Puppies!

Well, there goes the Texas Woodcock population! Garrison LOL. I like the little hellion. For upland birds I mostly hunt bob white, scaled quail, and Pheasant. Also chase sharpies and Huns a couple weeks each year. I make time for woodcock as well but it is only a short month and a half of season. W...

Puppies!

My new one is 4 1/2 months old. Cross Timbers Diesel. I call him “Moon”. Been running him a good bit on wild birds. Already figured out he has to get out and hunt to find birds. I love to see the point pull a pup under and hold it down! He is still a baby but when seasons close, this little guy will...

Re: New member

Welcome to the forum. I too have a couple fuzzy faced dogs, GWP's that hunt them all, upland and waterfowl. If you ever get a hankering to chase those bandit running birds in your dogs pedigree let me know. (we have a few chukars in Spudland) Thank you for the generous offer. Chukar is a bucket lis...

Re: Last weekend for Woodcock

Third point was spectacular viewing. The dog is looking at this bird. He is quivering nose to tail and his eyes looked like they were about to pop out of his head. The dog holds his water and I really want to kill this one for him. E901ADFF-29EC-4DA7-956D-962B372F1B11.jpeg Limit is three birds and m...

Last weekend for Woodcock

I hunt a variety of birds but the woodcock is my favorite of them all. By profession I am a forester which puts this little bird right in my wheelhouse. Their flush is similar to a quail but they put more pressure on my wing shooting than any bird I hunt due to the cover I hunt them in. Their errati...

Willie T. Registered today to comment on a woodcock hunting thread. Im an old bird hunter from Texas. Grew up hunting quail and waterfowl. I like all breeds of bird dogs and enjoy seeing how others go about training and running their dogs. The versatile breeds intrigue me. Currently I own two Pudelp...

Re: Bumping Woodcock

Greek, I am in Texas and also a woodcock hunter. I registered to comment on your post. Like the others already posted, stop shooting bumped birds. You are rewarding bad behavior. Some dogs that have been worked a lot on pen raised birds will initially have a tendency to crowd wild birds. Bumping wil...
