Burning is by far the preferred method to manage grasslands for the benefit of upland birds. The suggestion to run a controlled fire through and then LIGHTLY disk a third is great advice as well - a fall disking is preferred over a spring one, but that may not be possible if you're burning this spr...

It took them about one day. The whole running bird thing kind of threw them for a loop. But they came around. The last two days we had some pretty good dog work. All three dogs tore atleast one pad but they were still going. They ran 60 miles on the garmin. Not bad for two 8 yr old gyps and a four y...

Thats not too bad. But does the number of birds bagged really equal up to how successful the hunt was? I think not. Glad to hear you had a good time and got your dogs into some birds. On our way back from Kansas. Four of us killed 18 pheasants and 10 quail in 3 days. Had a good time and will be going back next year.

We are leaving for Pratt is KS Thursday evening. Talked to landowner and he said he seen a few pheasants and a lot of quail. So we are gonna give it a shot.

We supposedly have private ground to hunt with supposedly plenty of birds. So that's where we r headed. I've drove farther and had a horrible time. We will have enough adult beverages to make it a good time either way.

When she is on her way back to you walk backwards a couple steps then when she is a couple steps away from you take to quick steps foward and cut her off. Take the bird and praise, praise, praise.( not quick where it startles her but , just enough where she doesnt have time to cirlce you.) It worked...

!00 acres really isn't large enough to make a big difference unless adjoining property offers good habitat as well. generalities/theory---yes. however we've improved a 103 acre tract in SE Kansas over the last 10 yrs, 1 covey at that time....with improved shrubs, removing timber, adding native buff...
