Re: Training your puppy...

It all depends on the dog. Basic obedience for me starts at day one, always keeping things positive. Don't pressure a puppy make it fun. Your puppy is still young and you have lots of time until next season. Mfg able to read your dog knowing when to back off and when to push forward is important. It...

Re: New GSP is home

I don't know how the test differs from AKC and CKC. I would expect them to be similar though. Be prepared to run with a bracemate. You don't want your dog chasing the other dog around instead of hunting. The judges will probably be riding horses introduce your dog to them also for the same reason. A...

In the NAVHDA NA test the dog only has to show a willingness to enter the water. In other words the dog must enter and swim twice retrieval of the bumper is not required.

The BDC was developed for the average hunter with the average hunting dog to be able to compete in a fun format. It wasn't developed to test the breeding potential of dogs. It is what it is a fun way for a person with a dog that isn't trained so well to compete. I haven't read anyone say these are p...

Try patterning the gun. I bought a CA bobwhite sxs and had the same problem. I couldn't hit anything. I patterned it and found out it was shooting over a foot low at 20 yards. I hope you figure it out.

Also make sure the collar is tight and getting a good connection or the stimulation will vary. When the dog is wet in the field the contact is increased also be aware and vary the stimulation accordingly.

training a puppy?

At what age do you start training? I've seen many opinions on here all the way up to 2 years. What is your opinion and why? Be respectful and no attacks please. IMO I believe in letting puppies be puppies and kids being kids. With that being said we teach are kids don't we? We send them to school? W...

I never intended to give the impression I was suggesting to break a 6 month old puppy. Way to young for most dogs. The question was about chasing. Whoa has nothing to do with birds. It is a command to stand still or stop and stand still. The barrel teaches the dog to stand in one spot, nowhere else to go. The carpet gives the dog traction for a sure footing. Rocking the barrel makes a fidgety dog steady its balance or stiffen up. I start on th...

Maybe I don't understand. Don't you want to be the one to flush the birds? Or do you want the dog to do it. My first shorthairs were strictly hunting dogs and I did have them trained to flush on command.

Re: how did you all fix this?

This is just my opinion so take it for what it is worth. If you let your dog get away with something i.e. chasing, breaking whatever, you are really telling the dog it is ok. This creates a bigger problem having to break them of a behavior you condoned. Never let a dog get away with anything they ta...
