I use a choke collar ad a short solid core Check cord.15 or 20 ft. Make sure you have the collar on the dog properly. The sliding end should come over the dog's neck with the ring on the side nearest your leg at heel. Snap the check cord in the loose end. Your choke chain should be short enough so ...

Re: Exchanging commands for Whoa- yay or nay
Deal with words we use as commands is they actually have no meaning to the dog. The dog associates a word with an action. You can change the command anytime you want. We say whoa because we know what it means! We say here or come because we know what it means! The dog hears a certain sound and assoc...

Answer to your question is pretty simple for the vast majority of dog's. Don't take it from him, have him give it to you, simple. When he comes back with the bird be down on one knee. You'll notice doing that will create a pocket against your leg. I'm right handed. Take your right hand and put it ov...

I don't think he's got the traps yet. Get them and they will open a new world to you. Operate then as if you were a wild bird in that trap. Dog come's in cross wind soon as it hit's the scent cone, pop the bird. Say nothing to your dog and just go on. You know your dog want's the bird, no problem th...

Let's see, heel but only sometimes? Your dog is either heeling or it's not. At 13wks, use a check cord. Tell him no and pull him off what he's fixing to do wrong. Tell him here and he doesn't want to, he has no choice pull him in. Delmar said, "never give a command you cant enforce"!

My only suggestion would be go slow and be gentle. 13 weeks is pretty young to start using an e collar. Always work on the premis that pups have to understand what you want before you start correcting them I agree, 13 wks to young for an E collar. But not to young to wear one turned off. If you can...

Wolves have hurt the big game population in Idaho. When I lived in Montana, early 70's, Idaho tried to talk Montana into re-introducing the wolf. They got told no! Running a pup on wild birds before training doesn't hurt a thing. What hurt's is expecting the pup to learn from mistake's you make. I run pup's on wild birds prior the training, "bleep" birds mostly as there's not a lot of wild game birds around here anymore. As said above, keep your mouth closed a...

I wouldnt even worry about steadying that dog. If its pointing and looking back at you then there are more issues that need to be resolved than getting the dog steady. At this point I would let that dog bump and chase as many birds as you can out it on. You need to get that drive and desire up. Mak...

I'd bet a dollar to a sugar cookie I could have that dog scent pointing in less than 20 min if it has some prey drive and sounds like it does.
