Re: How expensive is it?

Depends if you're willing to sleep in your truck and live off breakfast bars and lukewarm coffee for a weekend  Tally gear, fuel, lodgings, food for the weekend, and entry fees. It can be done on a budget, but realize that you must make sacrifices in other areas to do it. Most amateurs have to...

Re: Woman's boots

I love my Ariat Terrains. They come in waterproof or not, are super light and ankle high, and have good support. All for $80 at Tractor Supply.

John Yates' posts concern dog laws that should concern us all. The antis, HSUS, PETA etc are very active in destroying or severely limiting dog ownership, not to mention hunting and other birddog activities. We have no organized voice in legislature. I'd bet not one in fifty of us have any idea of t...

Dealing with AKC can be very frustrating, but it might help a little bit to remember that the people that are taking care of your business are not dog people; they are generally totally clueless and have to go by whatever book they've been given. Add in that they aren't paid much and you get the typ...

Illinois Birddog Rescue has about 75 dogs looking for homes. Petfinder has 303 pointers, 311 esetters, 362 brits, 639 GSPs, and 62 GWPs. Even though petfinder has dogs listed with a best guess as to breed, a lot of those are obviously purebred. We've had a couple of rescue setters. The first came fr...

I've never had problems with dogs after running them as puppy/derbies. It gives them ground time, and if they catch a bird or two it's not the end of the world. However, I don't campaign my dogs as juveniles - they get a few trials and then we're done til broke dog stakes. If I pick up points, fine,...

There's a wormer called Iverhart Max that kills everything. It's really expensive though. Might be worth it to clean 'em out then continue maintainence with something cheaper, or if you have only one dog.

Droncit is praziquantel, and is only effective on tapes.

Put a gauze pad on his head. Then set the ear on top of that. Add another gauze pad on top of the ear -an ear sandwich so to speak. Skin-on-skin can cause soreness. Wrap the whole deal with vet wrap or duct tape, going in a figure 8 pattern around the other ear, under the jaw, top of head.

Math heads please advise!

Can somebody check my math? What I'm getting is scary. I'm calculating based on a 50# dog just because that's convenient. To get rid of tapes with praziquantel need 136mg/dose To prevent heartworm with ivermectin need 136 mcg/dose ivermectin gold is 1.55% ivermectin tube=7350mg 7350X .0155 = 144mg p...

Chris, Maybe I wasn't clear in my post. I meant that although lots of akc show people are adamantly anti-repricosity, many of the field contingent are not. Someone else had posted "The AKC field people refuse to allow cross-registration of the Reds" and that is most definitely not true. I made no me...

Lots of trialers hunt their dogs. When you contact breeders, tell them what you want and ask pertinent questions. Good breeders want to hook you up with the right dog, and will refer you elsewhere if they don't have it.

Hello, All...longtime lurker, firsttime poster here. Please don't lump all AKC Irish Setters into one group. There are some nice field dogs among them. All are not those sad show dogs. Also please note that by and large, the field community of Irish setter fanciers would approve of repricosity with ...
