Re: Flank Collar
Depending on how I feel about the dog I will either do the Smith Method (whoa post / flank) or the neck, Bill West, Gibbons, Lindly, Walker etc. etc. I do like the Smith Method as you do all of your flank / stand still work in front of the dog. That's where you eventually will be when you are workin...

Huntsmith aka Delmar, Rick & Ronnie Smith were (to my knowledge) the first to incorporated this technique. Basically it is a component of the "Whoa Post" process. I am sure if you did a search "whoa post" on this site, you would find a ton of stuff pertaining to it.

By the way, AKC says that failure to honor should be severely panelized but not be a disqualifying infraction. But judges commonly disqualify dogs that fail to do it. Be aware and be prepared to accept it.

At his stage in the pups life it is just building prey drive and having fun. I wouldn't worry about feathers or fur, you just want your pup to enjoy going to the field and exploring and chasing. There will be plenty of time later to establish controls.

As a breeder I think "free running" is great. Just watch the pups tail and it will tell you when it has had enough. I agree with Ray. Start your pup on a stake out and let him work out his resistance on his own. He can't relate the contact to you when he is on the stakeout. You should stake him in a safe, shady area with a water bowl near your house then leave. I think the chain should be around 18" long. Go insi...

Good looking loft. You may want to consider a design that allows you to easily reach in to clean and grab birds. I can't tell if it is a walk-in or reach in. 4X8 construction gets pretty heavy. Consider putting handles on the sides in case you want to move it from time to time. My lofts are reach in...
