Sounds like you know exactly what Im saying. Oh I feel your pain...my dog gave me heck all day today just trying to lay on the couch and take a sick day...she won. I do like the "lay down" command when they're restless but unreasonable. Other times you just have to know it's unfair having a GSP box...

Puppy should play and socialize with every dog you can imagine. Vaccines should be in place of course

+1 for getting the dog to lay down. That being said, I remember when I was going to college with my shorthair at her age of 2...$%*#@ that!!! I like my Dogtra 1700 NCP, it's got good range and it hasn't failed yet. I really like the size of the remote too, not at all like the ones where you're carring a relay baton through the woods

How many folks brush their dogs teeth?
I've never done it, but I'm starting to see the results of never doing it and I'm concerned about paying the price down the road. Turns out all those well advertised denta-bones and other chewies are bologna.

I would be concerned if my dog continued to vomit in the back of the pickup and I was unaware of it on a 6 hour road trip to Huntington. *Luckily my dog doesn't have that issue, just becomes antsy and a raging turd. I might also be concerned that the dog might not hunt even close to maximum potentia...

Sounds like it could be conditional too. Try just getting him/her to hold point over that wing. Exercise over. Treat, pat on the head. Training the dog to go into the bushes and fetch a wing will get you nothing in the field. Once the dog is holding poing over the wing, time to move to launchers or ...

I would move the recall training from the yard to the field; sounds like the dog understand's I have to recall in yard but do I have to do it in the field too? That's interesting that Quail can contract Tularemia. In Central Oregon we have Jacks all over and I've always been told the winter months are the safest time if you ultimately had to eat one (yuck). No you're not in any trouble. I wouldn't want a dog eating a whole jar or anything, but a tiny handful won't kill them, and really I doubt you'll even notice a symptom in terms of digestion. Perhaps a fart late in the evening that clears the room

In Oregon I hunt ridges with alder thickets and snowbrush along the old BLM roads. The grouse prefer the rock source for their gullets nearby and just love those thickets of snowbrush along the roads. It's the only bird (other than turkey) I don't often take my dog with me. Oh she's got no real rhyme or rhythm. It's actually kind of nice, she flushes in the creek side where it's 20-30 ft wide swaths of alder, and when she's in the tall grass around some of the barn houses she'll hold pretty nicely on point. Took the dog out on a fair weather day.
Worked several coveys, and was very impressed with Emma holding tight over a single until I booted it out of the grass.
No complaints.

It's very important to consider your climate. I live in Oregon, and in the VERY early season I'll send my shorthair after ducks, but right now its 14 degrees back home and I'm sure the water isn't much warmer. No, no discharge. She had this sneezing problem about a month ago when I let her in a buddies backyard for Sunday football. Seemed like she sneezed it out after a few hours and the fits never happened again till after the quail hunt, where she probably sniffed something up.

Yeah I stopped the peroxide, and the last day and a half I've actually been letting it breath since she's going to take the "bleep" bandages off anyways.

I don't know how grouse compare where you are to the ones I'm used to hunting...but beware. Tough birds for a beginner upland dog...tough tough birds. Well, yeah in theory. She definitely is a good dog, and she gets the job done. Like I said, if we weren't shooting so terrible our pictures would have looked like they were out of a guided hunt...she located quite a few birds for us.

Don's advice is solid foundational upland bird training. It's the basics.
You need birds for practice and repetition on the check cord hones those skills.
Unless you want a flushing dog, which isn't a bad thing, but by the sound of it that's not what you're going for.

Yes your dog is ruined. You'll never limit out on bumpers with wings attached again. By the sound of it, you're stuck hunting real birds, which is an unfortunate turn of events. Trade him in for a Miniature Poodle, I think they are natural bumper hunters with incredible drive.
