Re: just introduced pup to birds

If I were you I would take pup for walks in areas that have wild birds and let the pup explore, build confidence and teach itself how to hunt and keep track of you in the woods and fields. You have a lot of time to put birds in front of him.

What the gordon guy said. It's a 14 week old pup.

Re: post hunt effects on dogs

Young dogs often have to learn to pace themselves. As long as the dog is sound and not overheating or dehydrated, leave him down. Even if he trots along beside you, he's learning that he's going to be out for more than one or two hours and eventually he'll settle in. There's an old story regarding a...

My kennel runs have the same chain link on top as sides. Completely enclosed. Some dogs are better at being kenneled than others. As long as they can't get out, the majority conform. Although I've had one or two that never got over it, they were moved on. I prefer good citizens in the kennel.

That kinda hurt to watch.

Your dog seems to have lots of point, go have fun with him, worry about steadying him after he's busted and chased a bunch of birds. And don't ever lead your dog to the bird, use the wind and let him find it. Others will give more detailed analysis.

It's hard to paint any one line with a broad brush. All bird dogs will point off game from time to time, but if you want a bird dog, don't encourage the the behavior by shooting rabbits.
