Devils Creek with the method I use the bird in the air tells the dog to whoa. We teach stop to flush at the same time we are working on being staunch Absolutely, and I do exactly the same thing..but with a dog that's maybe 18 months or so. I will have taught him to whoa as a separate item before th...

We have too many usually to keep inside continuously. I have a 5 kennel building (10' x 24') with runs, and they spend their days there, but when either the weather gets too inclement (we live in Canada) or the mosquitos too fierce, they spend their nights in the house. I do heat the kennel, but it ...

With light field loads, or heavy target loads the recoil is non-existent, and follow up shots are quicker. If a 7 1/2 lb gun isn't a problem, why are you worried about recoil? Sorry i thought that was kind of a contradiction there. Hey Sorno...finish reading the sentence. I really like...

I would just spend more time building bird desire. About the only way to overcome the noise is have a dog so bird aggressive that it overcomes the noise. 9 mo is young, it would not hurt to spend the next 2-3 months letting her bump and chase. How long did she see birds before shooting? It is not a...

Just a couple of things: You don't want her to flush and chase grouse; she's a pointing breed. Grouse are the toughest bird you can train a dog on; expect a lot of failure. Don't let her catch planted or liberated birds she's supposed to be pointing. If you want her to chase birds, keep her on a ch...

I would never, ever put a pup I was training in position to catch a planted bird. If the pup learns he can catch a planted bird, he will think he can catch wild ones. It will be a major chore to get dog to hold point later on. Well then, start on wild birds. I let them have a ball and tear it up th...

I believe a good grouse dog comes from good grouse dog bloodlines. Or, it makes your odds of obtaining a good grouse dog that much better. And, of course training plays into the equation. Get that dog on lot's of wild birds early. Let him learn that he can't crowd his birds. The smart ones figure i...

The last 4 out of 5 have been Remington's...... I LOVE GAS AUTOS...... My buddy's 5 lb Ugartachea sxs in 20 gauge hurts with anything more than 7/8 oz., and even then gives me a rap on the cheek when I fire the right barrel that I find disconcerting. Had a Beretta 687L for 6 months and never could q...

Growing up on the Canadian Prairies, I cut my teeth on Sharptail, but if I had one day to live, I'd spend it hunting bobwhite. So my vote is: Bobwhite Quail, Huns, Ruffed Grouse, Sharp Tail, Pheasant Woodcock I'd probably have a heart attack hunting wild chukar's but would really like to go south fo...

Now I would consider a 16 as well if the right gun came along, but for the present... I am a 6'2 former police officer, and carrying around a 7 1/2 lb gun is not really an issue. I bought a Remington 1187 Premier 12 gauge when they came out with the 26" Light Contour barrel, and I've really enjoyed ...

Now if you've got a pup that will track a fleet footed rooster, and then reestablish point, I don't think you're going to have a problem. I would suggest that your dog knows more about what's happening, than your brother-in-law. However, If you're eventually going to want a dog that is steady to flu...

Had the opportunity to ride some prairie championships when Canada was declining to let the pros in back in the 80's, and the Sasketchewan and some other trials moved down here. Like pretty much all of them for what they are, unless they intend to give offense, not refering to you by any stretch, b...

Knocked a dog cold once when I had to slam on the brakes..... Then there's the skunks....I had a vizsla who would kill every one he saw. Since then... I built a dog box that holds 5 and only takes up the front 30" of the truck box. Its fastened in with turnbuckles to the truck box sides. Not perfect...

I read some years ago about a fella, I think he was one of the major circuit trainers, who just fenced in a big area, a couple of sections with bird populations (wish I had that kind of dough) and turned a bunch of pups loose in there to run around, gave them food and water and not much else. The s...

Nice dogs Devils Creek. Maybe you could start a post and spin a tail or two about prairie bird dogs, have noticed you hang around Manitoba now and then. The beauty of having two dogs is the opportunity to have a fresh one all the time. One of the scariest things to hear from a guy is" He backs really well, but hasn't found too many on his own". Dogs will accept that their position is to follow and add moral support. Sounds like you're on the right t...

The number one mistake that beginning hunting dog trainers make is to fail to understand how important frequent and constant expo...

Wow, now that is encouraging. What was the breed of the dog? Even a po' GSP guy knows that one. The Kansas Wind was an All Age pointer, elected to the American Field Hall of Fame in 1982. You have me stumped on Orion's Flush, however. The name is familiar, it was a pointer, but I do not recall that...

Great posts guys... I am using a pointer roading harness, available from any of the pointer/field trial supply houses. It really is designed for the tension to be from somewhat above. I use a 20' nylon rope with a loop on the back to fit over the "spoon" on my trooper saddle. I use a line that long,...

Great posts guys... My first pointer was a full brother to National Champion Orion's Flush. (1 litter later) bred by Ben Parr of Pratt Kansas ( Ch. The Kansas Wind, Ninnescah River Chief). I put a CKC CD (Companion Dog ) Title on him, entered him in an obedience trial with approx. 250 other dogs. We...
