First the disclaimer: I believe in using dogs for the purpose the were bred. Airedales were bred for fur. So for birds I would look towards the pure pointing breeds or the versatile breeds. Now with that in mind, have you contacted or been to the discussion board that is on the High Country Airedale...

Here is what I have learned. Doves are not a good bird to introduce a dog to hunting/retrieving. The feathers pull out of the bird very easily and stick to the dogs mouth. Also, their size makes it too easy for the dog to chomp or even swallow the bird. I have seen it recommended that you wait until...

How about a boykin? I know they do well on doves and I would imagine they are used quite extensively on squirrel in the Carolinas where the originated. They are the right size to hang out on a boat and they love water.

I am going to take a chance on the Garmin. Since I am new to dogs and new to big country hunting, I still don't have the various electronic devices. I was planning on getting a new Tri-tronics Pro-100 g2 e-collar and accessory beeper ($389 + $90), and I was going to buy the GPS model (60csx $360) th...

For duck hunting first, try 10 Minute Retriever by John and Amy Dahl. Or you can try Training a Retriever for Marsh and Meadows by Spencer (I think). But also as important, join a hunting retriever club. In Iowa you should be able to find both HRC and NAHRA clubs. The North American Hunting Retrieve...

Bogwalker, Here is the DD club website. You should be able to get your answer there regarding the scores. Basically, a DD has to pass tests to be able to breed in the German system. VJP is a natural ability test for dogs up to 16 months. Typically little training is done, hence the NA. HZP is a inte...

ND, Go to the place you get your license from and pick up a Big game zone map. That should tell you the lottery areas, management areas and intensive harvest areas. On the map the areas will be 100-475 or something like that. The whole state used to be lottery for antlerless deer until a couple year...

I just moved to MN and I was researching the deer reg's and couldn't believe how difficult they make it to go deer hunting. It's getting rediculous. What do you find so difficult about deer hunting in Mn? You buy a big game license the day before the season opens and you go. You should try going he...

Roch, For waterfowl, I would just head over to the Mississippi and learn it well. Try Reno bottoms, Weaver bottoms, or get a WI license and head to the Wi. side south of the Iowa border. You can also head up to the Red Wing area. Also, the DNR has blinds in the road ditches around Rochester for pass...

The books that seem to be the most recommended by current retriever people are "10 Minute Retriever" by John and Amy Dahl and "Smartwork I" and "Smartwork II" by Evan Graham. Both of these are said to be easy for newbies to understand. The Smartwork series can also take you as far as you want to go ...

I will not comment on the virtues of "Waterdog", but I will try to explain why it is not highly recommended by those with a vested interest in dog training (pros, etc) There are a few reasons which usually pop up when a discussion of "Waterdog" arises. The first is the belief that Richard Wolters us...
[quote="Addict"]I like the retriever training methods of Evan Graham. He has a good book out called Smart Fetch. You can get it here: http://www.gundogsupply.com/smfebyevgr.html Evan Grahams book is highly recommended but just to clarify. "Smartfetch" is the book that deals with force fetching. "Sma...
