Re: Getting obese dogs into shape

No experience with obese dogs, but with any dog that is out of shape, start easy. Short walks and swims would be a good beginning. If the dogs are severely overweight, you may want to do more swimming to reduce the amount of potential negative impact to the joints...

Re: Two Clubs Running Two Hunt Tests -- Same Site, Same Day

The Kansas tests are run very well. If you limit yourself to running both clubs' tests on the same ground, each half of a day, you are extremely limiting your entry potential. If you have the capability to run two fields as indicated in previous posts, you'll be much farther a head.

Remember, the duck search doesn't necessarily result in a retrieve. Just as it's named, your dog is being evaluated on its search and ability to expand as needed. I think a lot depends on what command you plan to give your dog when you send him on the search. If you are planning to use "find it" lik...

Try to find other dog owners or training groups to join for training. So many times an extra set of hands or eyes does wonders. Not only that, but they can help you avert some of the mistakes they may have made.

Read a few books, take it all in, and figure out what works best for you and your dog.

My .02... Any performance title just tells you how trainable a particular dog is. Yes, it must have the instincts and natural abilities to build on, but you can't get there without training. Some dogs have it, some don't. Sometimes trainability is reproduced in a litter, sometimes not. Many times do...

If you get involved in a NAVHDA chapter, you don't need to do the water work if you don't want to. The best thing about most NAVHDA chapters is the decades of experience to draw from. The majority of folks involved are more than happy to help anyone who attends.

Get a pup on birds as soon as possible. The sooner the better. The most important time frame for introducing anything the dog will be exposed to as an adult is between 8 and 20 weeks. Hopefully the breeder gave them exposure before you picked up.

Phenomenal year for pheasants. Quail did take quite a bit of work to find. Not too bad if you can gain access to private land.

If you do move to Tulsa, be sure to look up OKNAVHDA. The majority of our training and testing takes place just south of Tulsa and in the Enid area.
