Re: This Afternoon's Woodcock Hunt
Did it again today. Hot, temps in mid 60's and muggy. Didn't get out until 4:15 or so. Only had an hour of shooting time. Got 9 points on woodcock. 5 in the bag again. Also, Delta pointed a covey of quail. About 10 birds. Did not shoot any quail. We decided a couple of weeks ago we wouldn't cut any ...

You will be surprised at how fast and well that is going to heal up. She will be back to her normal self, just keep infection at bay. I had a bad barbed wire cut/rip/tear on a beagle. Welcome back Frank! I thought we had lost you for the whole hinting season! The hunting is great. We went yesterday and it seems as if the bird numbers on our place doubled in a few days. At 3 o'clock this afternoon Maison and I finally got a chance to head out to our little honey hole. We finally got some rain this past week. The dog work was stellar. The shooting was not! I compete in NSTRA trials because they are affordable and don't require a horse. I enjoy them immensly. I would however like there to be an incentive for broke dogs. I think steadiness to wing and shot should be pushed for safety reasons if nothing else.

This is what I think happend. First of all there were 4 deer in the clearing when I took the shot. My shot hit a little high and forward on the left shoulder. Bird dog finds dead deer. And makes owner feel better.
This morning I shot a little six point buck. I just knew I made a solid shot from about 150 yards. The buck bounded off into the brush. Nice article on Johnny Crocket in a recent PDJ issue. He was kind of an anomoly. Did not come from big running field trial stock and was not a pre-potent sire. In 1970 he won the national championship and was the first setter to win since the 40's. He was handled by W.C. Kirk.
