My pup just hit his 6 month mark. Last weekend I had him at the farm while we deer hunted. I have had an issue with him this past week on retrieving to hand. He gets 10 or so feet away and drops whatever he is holding. Saturday afternoon I was working with him on basics, which he has pretty well do...

LOL Very good. Consider a setter Nick. I know a good breeder near you who regularly breeds fine hunting pups - Terry is getting one in Dec. They are just fine in the house- with proper opportunities to run/ hunt. You can get one on the smaller size- mine is only 35 pounds. They don't have to be a b...

Getting the itch

Well with the passing of the wife's lap dog this past summer I've been getting the itch to add a second dog to the house again. I feel like a lab is probably the right choice to add but am having a hard time settling on that. Whatever breed we end up going with I know this time around I will of cour...

I think so. Shedding is a major problem with my cocker. He is in an all out coat blow year round. There are no times when it's better or worse. He literally sheds as much as 3 normal dogs. I have asked other cocker folks (and springer folks) that I train with and they all say their dogs don't shed m...

Good looking dog. I think without much bird exposure, you need to decide what you are going to train her as - pointer or flusher.... You have been keeping her close so to me that sounds like flusher as a pointing dog that close isn't going to be very productive.

To me I think of "mature" as kind of all-encompassing. I think of it as the entire package - the dog is physically mature, mature enough to absorb the training you are giving it and performs it consistently, it is consistent on game and how it reacts to it and different situations, and then of cours...

You're not using them while still frozen are you? Asking him to pick up an ice cube should make you trigger on why he doesn't want to. Always thaw birds unless you want to deal with mouth issues later on.

I think the best way to train a spaniel how to do blinds is to forget the spaniel part and train it as you would a lab. I think it is just what the dog becomes accustomed to... My own cocker finds most of his retrieves within the same distance (due to my personal training geography).
