FWIW, I never read the directions on the bag. For me, it is a no brainer and very simple. I just keep an eye on the dogs and feed accordingly. I think many people way over think this. JMO.

For me the bottom line is the prong collar works extremely well with a very light touch and there is not much risk of injuring the dog.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that it is important for safety reasons. It has saved a dog's life a couple of times for me.

A live trap works pretty well. I had a similar problem once and now there is not a cat in sight and there was no harm done to the strays.

Or you could just hide a piece of meat (hot dog, chicken, etc.) hide it and give the dog whatever command you want to use for hunt dead ( I just use "dead" or "dead bird" ). A few times of this and the dog will find your bird when given the command. Whatever method you choose, it shouldn't take long...

Sounds like your FF wasn't complete and/or you never reinforced the command. FF is a continual process, not a once and done. It only gives you another tool to ensure delivery to hand.
