Re: Why do we lionize wild birds?
I don't mind hunting Preserve birds, but I ENJOY the hunting of wild birds. To me hunting a preserve is about the killing of birds, numbers, working puppies, marksmanship. Hunting wild birds is about knowledge and know-how. Do I know enough to find the right habitat to find the birds? The number col...

Re: First time out - going for Sharptail and Partridge in ND
Sharptails and Huns don't like heavy cover. Unless it's hot out then Sharptails will find the shade tree rows, choke cherry patches and or buffalo berries. Generally they (Sharptails) like alfalfa and grasshoppers and feed early in the morning and late in the afternoon. They also like elevation. If ...

I believe Kansas has a program that allows hunters access to private land. I would get one of those maps, if there is one. If there are any books or atlas's get them. I would steer clear of MT or the Daktoas during late Dec unless you like to hunt in below zero temps and high winds. Only "Dedicated" bird hunters venture forth during that part of the year. No, a $1000.00 is not unreasonable. You never get out ($ wise) what you put into one (Passion, $ and Time). You didn't say what breed it is....But if there's one in every backyard, imo you have an uphill battle. Because people will think they can do better with a 7 week old puppy that's half the pri...

If you have launchers why would you not put the chukar in them? I'm assuming you already know that your dogs point birds, and now you're working on steading them. Unless you want the added distraction of birds running around in front of your dogs, which if you chase chukars will happen, use the laun...

I would be pretty happy to hunt over a setter that crouched like an old time dog. That would be something worth seeing at least once. Just find a bad trainer who is hard with his dogs. Not necessarily! I have a dog that is very cautious around birds. I was hunting Huns on a very windy day and birds...

How about an English Cocker or a Springer? Game little dogs in my opinion. I had a Field Bred English Cocker that would flush grouse, pheasants and woodcock, bark a couple of times when he jumped a rabbit and would break ice to fetch mallards, and weighed 35lbs which means a lot less hair. In my opinion, Birds, birds and more birds only works if your dog has a lot of "Point". But if your dog doesn't have a lot "Point" (The desire to point birds above all else) an over abundance of contacts will turn a pointing dog into a flushing dog. The funny thing is with that method, that by the t...

Take him to a boarding kennel for a few days until the little dog is no longer "in season". Male dogs can be difficult to live with in that situation.

Gun fit is much more important than gauge. Go with the gun that "feels" the best (points where you're looking) and shoot it within it's limits. You'll ultimately hit more targets/game with a guns that fits you, as opposed to the one you choose based on gauge.

Would the answers be different if the gene pool was smaller as it is with some less popular breeds?
Most of those are pretty debilitating problems. Some are not... Clearly It depends on the dog and what it brings to the table.
