Once a dog has a little hunting experience they should quickly learn to distinguish between live and dead game.
Diemo
Took Diemo out over the weekend and got a nice boar for the pen to use with our upcoming pups. Here is a video clip someone shot after we unloaded the boar and I was carrying Diemo back to my truck. Love his enthusiasm. http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy151/mschlapa/th_VID_20131124_144059_zps2136...

What kind of squirrel dog do they make? Some will tree a little but if all you want is a squirrel dog there are many breeds that would be much better, feist or cur mainly. These dogs are mainly bred for putting teeth on game. You can look on youtube and see tons of video people have put up there fr...

He tracks like crazy, will tree some but not like a hound. They are more opportunistic hunters, bred for earth work mainly. They tree much better on bear or lions where they can see something when they look up a tree. Hard to see a squirrel or other small game in our thick unmanaged southern forests.

Here are a few pictures of our DJT Diemo (Little D) with his catch of the day. We got a call from a plumber friend who was working under a old farm house. He said something growled at him and it freaked him out. We took Diemo over to remove it so he could finish his job. http://i787.photobucket.com/...

If there is no immediate danger like near by vehicle traffic I would definitely be letting my pup off lead. That is how they start to learn things about hunting and build their confidence.

I have used a few different methods, lifting on the loose skin just in front of the rear leg (flank), pinching lips on teeth, and have also used a e-collar, just depends on the dog. Starting with a proper FF program helps with these issues. Some dogs are what they call "hard mouthed", or even game e...

Get a live duck, tape its wings or pull some flight feathers so it cant fly, turn it loose and let her chase and catch it. Builds prey drive, that will tell you pretty quick where you are at.

First off, I will say all my dogs have been exposed to, and had in their mouth, game of many species before ever reaching the age to begin the FF process. I use some game in the early stages, which for me is teaching hold. Once the dog is holding a bumper well, so I can leave it on the table and go ...

One thing to remember is every dog is not he same, what works with one may not with another. Over the years I have learned things from many different people and have had to be able to adapt my training methods to individual dogs. That's what makes a successful trainer IMO.
