Re: Trying to pinpoint what's wrong
Excellent post. It's all in the philosophy. We set up the environment for the dog to learn. We drive the truck, bring the birds, find the field etc... The dog has to be allowed to learn for him self independently ; he figures out he can't catch the bird so he starts stopping or creeping then pointin...

Re: Trying to pinpoint what's wrong
I wouldn't worry about irreparable damage yet. We all make mistakes. Forget the gun for now. Let the dog get her joy of birds back. Don't work the dogs together. have the dog kenneled where she can't hear the gun when the other dog is working. When you do start again , do it right - small noise, far...

Re: Are your dogs Microchipped?
I know this is an old poll but always relevent.
Mine are chipped but now I'm not sure why.
Not all animal control centres have the wand ( learned this) and not all vets check a new dog coming in.
I had a chipped dog stolen , never to be seen again. I assume it went to a vet at some point.

If when I put the broth on it , or gave her a wiener in it after 3 days, she still wouldn't eat it, I'd be at the vet right away.
But she chows that down.
Makes me think it's a contest of will. Gee I hate to lose. LOL
Thanks for the posts.

Dog Off Food
My dog is not wanting to eat any of her food. 2 years old I'm from the old school - if you're hungry you'll eat so we usually have a stand-off. No health problems obvious. Lots of energy - no change in behaviour, drinking etc. The longest I let her go is 3 days and then I put something on her food (...

At 16 weeks I make sure we have lots of fun and socialization with all kinds of experiences ( kids, noises, places other dogs ) but I also start expecting a response to commands. I use the come word when the dog is coming towards me. It quickly picks this up. A treat helps. Honestly my pup was comin...

Actually that was a very good question EnglishSetterHunter
How can a big running trial dog shift gears and hunt close at hunting season time? is what you were asking I believe.
I'd be interested in answers to that question too.

I'm no expert but I wouldn't run them together. I'd also plant the birds far from you and on the edges. Both of these things can make a big difference in how your pup develops. PS I have a 2 yearold and a 5 year old. 2 year old is a much better field trial competitor. Even now I don't work them toge...

Medications make it harder for the dog to "hold it" in a crate like they normally do - especially after surgery. Is there anyway someone could let the dog out more often during the day for a couple weeks?
