Re: Weather and Habitat Make or Break our Bird Numbers
Birds, I think this points out that probably the "weak link in the habitat chain" is good thick winter cover and good nesting and brooding cover and insect production. With modern farming practices this link has been further weakened. Brush and tree lined weedy fencelines have been removed, ditches ...

Re: Weather and Habitat Make or Break our Bird Numbers
If a game bird population has a minimal viable breeding population they can recover if the habitat is favorable. Most upland bird species will rebound quickly if habitat conditions improve. They are short lived individuals that have large clutch sizes. This allows populations to replace themselves q...

My 2 cents. Brits tend to be better open country prairie bird hunters. Sharpies, sage grouse, huns and chukars. Springers are more adept at thick cover pheasants and waterfowl hunting. Both breeds hunt forest grouse and quail equally well, although I'd give the advantage to springers on quail runners...

Bdabird, Welcome to the group and thank you for your service. Sounds like you have quite the pup. You might try freshly killed birds while in the field, or try wings from birds you may have killed and frozen. A warning came out from some local vets. Some brands of peanut butter have begun to substitute the sugar with an artificial sweetner used in sugar gum, xylitol. Take it from me, someone who has hunted S. Idaho for over 40 yrs, if you keep your dog on a soft surface, keep your Vet on speed dial. You will have cracked and cut paws and broken nails with the lava content of the soils, cacti spines and thorny plants.

Mixture of small grains in a flat open feeder. My guess is the mourning doves will be moved out by the collared doves in the neighborhood. No need for a hanging waterer. They will drink out of any water source on the ground.
