Re: force fetch?
Force fetching, assuming it is done correctly, will leave no doubt in your dog's mind that what you want is for him to pick up and hold the object and deliver it to you , be that a dummy, bird, whatever. What I took you to mean by the word "explore", was coming out of the water, and ignoring you to ...

Re: Long haired woes
My dog's hair is very coarse so they don't stick as much but you can save money by buying the same stuff from a candle & soap making supply house. People at the farm do that and its a fraction of the cost. Could you please explain this a bit further? I'm not quite sure what candles and soap have to...

Re: Long haired woes
Thanks Ryman,
I train cutting horses for a living, so I'm quite familiar with Cowboy Magic as well. I agree that it is the best stuff since sliced bread, but you can cut the show sheen with water 50/50 and the spraying application is so easy. Also the Cowboy magic is a bit pricey. Thanks again.

You say he is lowering his head. Is he doing this in a cowering manner, or just trying to avoid giving up his bumper? You man just need to back off a bit and let him have some fun for a while. What is his tail doing?

Long haired woes
I'll be picking up an ES pup the first part of March. This will be my first long haired dog, and I keep reading about the tangles and having to spend a bunch of time getting burs and trash out of the hair. I'm not opposed to spending time on the dog, I just didn't envision that time being spend groo...

I agree with what's been said about FF, and when it should be done. I will point out that your pup is probably still in the teething stage (till 7 months or so), and his dropping or mouthing the dummy may well have nothing to do with his actual desire to retrieve. NBD at this point.

Ray, I thank you for your post. I indeed fall into the "family hunter category". The area and terrain that I hunt is nowhere near as open as the terrain most of you are used to. Around here, especially where I'd be woodcock hunting, you may not see a pure white dog 15 yds away in some spots (my bad ...

I have an older (10 yrs ish) tri tronics no bark collar, box and all. That is kind of where I'm getting crossed up here. I am a big fan of versatile dogs that are user friendly and take some of the work out of hunting. The sit thread got way out of hand, so I thought this would be a better place to talk about the tangents that were generated there. Ray, Good post. Thanks and I agree. BTW, I didn't say can't retrieve, I said doesn't retrieve. Certainly the FT dogs have their place, and I'm not downing them. I think the difference in the way they're handled is the main thing. I'd dang sure rather have a pup with champs on paper than take a chanc...

Re: Attention problems with HEEL and WHOA
FWIW, I've had good success having a cue that means pay attention. For me, it is just a very slight little whistle using only my tongue. If I had the dog at heel, you couldn't hear me from 15 away. Whenever I want the pup's attention. I give the little whistle, and then a bump if they don't give it ...

+1 as well I am a hunter, and probably would never be a Serious Field Trialer. For me, a dog that doesn't retrieve, or goes so far and fast that I have to be horseback just to keep up with is not going to be enjoyable for my hunting style. From my experience, some FT retrievers are the same way. Tho...

Re: To sit or not to sit!
I guess I am a hunter with a Field trial mentality. The reason I and I think most people have dogs anymore is they enjoy the dogs. It sure isn't to kill birds and feed the family. And there is no bigger thrill than seeing a dog use its head and find where the birds are. That doesn't even compare to...

Re: To sit or not to sit!
I may be wrong, but I assume that most of the people on these forums are hunters and not field trialers. Again, as you say, you train a dog for your purposes. For my purposes and for many hunters, that means that when you tell a dog to lie down in a corner of the house or to sit, you expect them to...

Most of the people here fall into this category it would seem, since most of us are merely training our own dogs, and are not ever going to have the experience that comes from training 100's of dogs. I merely take exception with the point that teaching "sit", or basic obedience is the...
