I believe that why you hear a trial focus in the advice given is because the vast majority of people that have vast experience training dogs to high levels are trialers or are professional trainers that frequently cater to trialers. Brian, Is this what you are talking about? If so it will work but you will have to cut some of the hose off because it will be to heavy. If the pup is going to be real close to the bird I would clip it. Not like you are saying but with a harness where the wings are "clipped" so they can't flap. You don't want a bird to scare a pup at this age. Once the pup is use to birds and has more confident you won't have to clip the wings anymor...

It all depends on what part of Europe you get your dog from. Some dogs are bred heavy for fur, and some for birds. Just like any other dog it's all about the lines.
