Re: Buying a older dog.
My own experience was that you either spend a fortune or settle on a middling dog. I looked pretty hard for a started dog after having an unpleasant experience with my last puppy. I looked at a dog from a guide string at a preserve in CO and several dogs from prominent trial guys here in MT. I talke...

Puppy Chow
Last week I took my dog in for her second round of shots and de-wormer. Doc asked what I am feeding her and I told her PPP 30/20. Been doing that because it’s what the breeder was giving her and it’s what I fed my last dog. She said I should probably do a purina puppy food for the first year because...

Get OnX total freaking game changer. Re: First Hunt - Looking for Tips
I’ve only done this once but I was laid off at the time and hunted a ton with my dog the first year. He was not whoa broke or particularly staunch yet but knew enough to quarter and what the game was. Biggest take always were: -get out and practice your shooting. You’ll spend a lot of time and effor...

Re: Couple of Questions
I’ve got that loud and clear. She’s been really good so far about not being very vocal. My last dog would just howl and cry and make every sort of awful noise when we tried to crate train him or left him in the kennel. I had a squirt bottle and would go out and spray him in the face a few times and ...

Re: Couple of Questions
Scrap the training table, you don't need one. Those are really for Pro's or Am's with a ton of dog's. You'll find that putting a piece of 3/4" X 14" X 8' long between two card table chairs will do a great job for you. The springiness of the plywood makes the dog tentative and they accept pressure e...

Re: Couple of Questions
My dogs have always been kenneled outside, so no help on the first part of your query. As far as benches are concerned, lots of things can work. What you are doing is getting the dog off the ground which creates a bit of uncertainty for them. A picnic table works, as does a picnic table bench. The ...

Re: Couple of Questions
With my pups I split time between the two, as well as give them time on the tie-out chain. When I am gone for the day, they go in the outdoor kennel, when we are home they are allowed into one area of the house (family room), and they head to their crates if we are eating or are away from the house...

All my dogs sleep in the house in their kennels. Any table, bench, tailgate will work. I started with a goat milking stand. Even a chest freezer will work. Don't make stuff difficult. Your dog doesn't care. Now ever time my three year old GSP sees a picnic table in a camp ground she jumps up on it....

1. Those of you who keep your dogs in the house, I have been crate training my pup, she’s about 11 weeks old at the moment. I would seriously chill out. You’re anthropomorphizing the behavior of a very young animal. It’s not doing anything to spite you it’s simply doing what puppies do, mess around with stuff that looks interesting. Just puppy proof the house or have a designated zone and fence it off. I have a very youn...

I’ve been curious about this exact thing. Wondering if anyone bred for traits or behaviors regardless of breed and what would happen? If you had a mutt mixed up of britts, setters, pointers etc. would it still be a good bird dog?

My understanding is that it’s a total crapshoot. You pick the parents and then which puppy is way less important if it matters at all, at least that’s what Delmar Smith believed. Assuming that’s the truth it’s harmless to try and improve your guess right? I asked to stop by and check them out and wa...

Totally agree about the started/finished dog idea. My experience was that it’s easier said than done. I went and looked at two. Washouts from trial or guide strings. I’m no expert but I wasn’t super impressed and they were crazy expensive, one was $4500. My understanding is the economics of training...

What about the pedigrees? I’m pretty confident they’re both good litters but just a bunch of names on paper to me, no idea what they mean. Maybe that’d help me pick between the two?

WOW,I have never had 60 grouse flush wild. You must live in grouse paradise. This is Miles of prairie and creek beds. Some pasture and some corn -milo- sunflowers. I totally get where you are coming from. Opportunities to kill wild birds over your pup can be hard to come by depending on where you are hunting or how often you can get out. Part of what makes the sport fun is how exciting it is approaching a dog on point. I have a young dog as well and do my best...
