You sound like a very nice man , but be TOUGH with your dog. Say it, mean it and follow through. Don't be long-winded with the dog.

Put them on their backs ; stroke their breast ( they go to sleep) ; tuck head and you're good to go. They leap to life faster then dizzying.

I just use my second dog.
I put him on point over the crest of a hill or around a corner. It works great for teaching backing.
I get help from another person.
He works the first dog into a point, while I bring the second dog over the hill.
You can switch and work the other dog too.

Teach him a "turn ' command - whistle, word . Teach it on a check cord initially. That way everytime he's going out farther then you want , you turn him . He'll pick up what you want and learn to turn himself.
