Re: male vs female
I have & have had both. I'm more interested in their independence, prey drive, conformation, etc. Seems like there are fewer female national field trial champs but then it's easier to keep a male on the circuit without having to deal with a heat cycle. Good females are also diverted from participati...

Re: Chests - What Size & Shape do you Prefer
The theory behind a deep chest would be the bigger the chest the more room for the vital organs to cool and lungs expand leading to better stamina. Our breed standard calls for the chest to extend to the elbow. Now, I know one of my dogs does not extend that far and has good stamina. Wonder what it...

By the way for those that don't know, if you are only going to wear one ear plug while hunting, place it in the ear away from the stock (on a rifle or shotgun). The ear tucked into the stock is less exposed.

You have to read carefully. Some indicate at what decibel they will begin compressing or limiting the sound above that level. You can end up comparing apples to oranges.

Re: Chests - What Size & Shape do you Prefer
You guys are cracking me up! But to the original question, I prefer narrow and deep. Seems to me the dogs I have seen with the smoothest gait were built this way, not sure if it was the chest type that enabled a smooth stride or if it was coincidental. For smooth strides we'd have to talk about the...

Chests - What Size & Shape do you Prefer
I prefer a large, well formed chest. However, if I can't have everything I'll take slightly narrower between the shoulders, with the most important portion protruding well away from the spine in the area just below the shoulders & a narrow waist - over broad shouldered, shallow in front and a larger...

Charlie, It was kind of a two part hypothetical to flush out the points: 1. If you can't see it you don't know if it happened. The old "if a tree falls in a forest but no one is there to hear it ...." 2. For a whole variety of reasons (weather, cover, previous pressure, etc.) wild birds won't always...

When hunting with a flushing dog do you count the birds that blow out the end of the field 100 yards in front of the dog, I don't think so. and you don't count it agaist the pointing dog either. And that is my point exactly! Charlie That's just great but it doesn't stop your buddy with a retriever,...

If you couldn't see a pointing dog bust the bird(s) - you have no way certain of knowing or proving the dog busted the bird(s). On the other hand - flushers are perfect in this regard - they always bust the birds! It's thus much easier to attempt to criticize lack of perfection in pointing dogs, esp...

Some breeders with large litters will push owners to take pups sooner so they can get rid of the puppy care hassles. Personally I don't like taking them before 7 weeks & see potential benefit in waiting even longer. I haven't heard of the downside to waiting longer.

Crate training - Start the overnight training as soon as you get the pup. Live with the whining & howling for 2-3 days until it quits. Puppies potty & urinate so frequently at that age they'll go virtually every time you take them out. The trick is to never make them wait too long so they virtually never have an accident in the house. Having lots of accidents in the house tends to increase the length of time to get them reliable.
