Above and beyond all the don't teach the pup to sit advice, what the dog appears to be indicating is that you may be using to much pressure around birds (that may just be too much yapping, commands etc.). While the dog is 'sitting on point' with birds involved I personally wouldn't use doco's advice...

Are the unmaintained roads in the county forests in Lincoln or Oneida still driveable - snow cover looks minimal on the accumulation maps I've found but don't know how much to trust those. Thinking of going up this weekend just wondering about conditions.

As several others have said there's no need for any heat. The two things about winter is if you fly them they are a big flying ribeye in the sky for hawks and owls that have migrated south so you'll soon have a bunch of raptors hanging around. Have you talked to the dogs breeder? If the breeder trains his own dogs you may be able to work with them. If they aren't local they may have a recommendation of a local pro to work with.

Do you intend to go to two dogs and stop? If you do you may want to look at an older dog. Then in 5 years or so get a younger dog. If you get another puppy now at some point you'll end up with two old dogs.

I agree with sharon on the chest guard. My male had one that didn't fit in the front legs that he wore during deer hunting season and it slowed him down tremendously.
