If no one else has said it yet I will... I'm very jealous of the amount of time you get to spend in the field! I think you log more field time in a week than I will in a month. It's fun reading about your progress with Tubbs. Best of luck as it continues. X2 My season starts this coming Saturday, b...

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds
If you start useing the e-collar when he starts to go in on the birds you will get a dog that blinks birds to avoid being shocked. He'll try to avoid birds so he doesn't get shocked. That's how you get a dog to avoid deer, snakes, etc. -- when they smell or see deer, snakes, etc, you crank the colla...

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds
SLOW DOWN -- you are trying to do too many things at once. You just got him to start finding birds & pointing them in the last 2 days --now you want him to be steady to wing, shot, & fall. You are going too fast, give him a chance to be a pup and figure it all out. I'll bet you just walked right pas...

Re: How far should Brittany range
If the wind is over 30mph, I won't hunt my dog in tall heavy cover without an Astro -- it's too hard for both you and the dog to keep track of each other in high wind. When the wind is high, I hunt shorter cover, so we both know where we are. The way you said the dog acted when he came back, he prob...

I feed after the hunt only -- I worry about the possibility of twisted stomach on morning feedings, so I don't fed in the mornings on days they will hunt. If dog is tired and not eating, try mixing warm water into food. still not eating, I put a little chicken broth in with the food (use the unsalte...

Re: Is It Time to Give Up?
There is a NAVHDA club in Sioux Falls and they do a lot of training & have access to birds. You could probablly get them to do a couple fake shoot to retreive trials with an e-collar on. They train for AKC hunt test and about every other situation. They are a good bunch of people and enjoy helping p...

I got good news this last week end from a past puppy buyer. Re: What's next for my puppy?
Since you are going to mainly be hunting upland, you might want to switch to AKC pointing dog hunting tests. They are broken into 3 levels -- junior hunter, senior hunter, and master hunter. If you go to AKC's web site and google their search engine for qualifications for each level it will give you...

Back when I was younger and hunted all the time I used to get a new pup every two years, so most times I had 5 dogs--1 pup learning to hunt, 3 dogs that knew how to hunt, & 1 old dog that knew how to hunt but was better at laying around the house ;-) Now that i'm old and my back & knees barely work,...

Here are a couple pictures of my buddy's young setters on point while training. Both dogs are coming along great on their birds and will have a lot of pheasants shot ...

It was few years ago, I used Buckeye Dog Haulers(eastern 1/2 of US) to haul a couple of pups. I think it was around $300 back then (airline was about same cost). Picked up at my door and delivered to the door of the buyer. You still have to supply a health certificate to transport the animal. I pref...

I use a paint roller -- my dogs like holding soft items better than hard items. Once you have it in his mouth, tap him under the chin to keep his head up and him holding on. If his head drops down --he'll try and spit it out. Keep lightly tapping under his chin until he gives in and holds it without...

Keep working on her commands in new locations. She needs to learn she has to do them where ever you ask her to--not just around home. Once she gets different locations down, then start adding distractions (kids in the distance, dogs in the distance, noise, etc). Sounds like she is coming along. Keep...

Cabelas has long plastic replacement collars with holes every inch so they can be cut to the required length. They have them in 1" & 3/4" widths.
At least they did in the past--works fine for my Garmin e-collar.

You can do sharpies in Nebraska--but no huns. There is Bessey National Forest in the middle of Nebraska or Mekelvie National forest in North Cental Nebraska. I keep my pigeons and quail in the same pen and don't have any problems with them dieing or getting sick. I just can't put my bobs up and let the pigeons free fly or I'll have some of my quail escape. I'll load my pigeons up in the truck and drive them away from my house and let them fly back home a...

Have you thought about buying a finished dog--that way you know what the final product will be -- one that exactly fits what you want it to do. Since it would probably be at least 2 years old to be completely finished, all the health checks have probably already been done (hips, elbows, etc.) Just a...
