It is certainly possible to keep a hunting breed while living in a city. I lived for most of my life in Edinburgh , Scotland. My house was on the very top of a block of flats. I had a britt and a G.S.P. , I didn't have any real .problems. I think it is important that the dogs are clean, non- aggress...

Whiskey !!! I wondered if I'd meet anyone I knew on here! I won't feel so bad now about asking questions after some of the asks you've done! I hope you had a great New Year. I'm still recovering from mine - must have been the Black Bun can't have been the amber nectar! Great to me...

The collar I've just bought cost 195 pounds, don't know what that is in dollars. I've only recently started with computers and typewriters, I'm king of the one fingered typists ! I am unsure of buying over the internet but for years have had a fancy for one of your shooting coats, I've seen on...

Thanks, all of you, for the information. It is very difficult in Britain to get any info on Britts in America. American bred britts are disliked here, this is probably because the first britts brought into the country came from France by a man named , I think, Stan Smith. To give this man his due, h...

Sorry Helen, I can't see Bucks' Britt in Vickys' pedigree. Vickys' American grandsire was American Field Champion " Buck de Lamont" Grand dam was "Sandy Meadow Lane" this bitch had Dual American Trial and Field Champion "Lost River's Copper" as her sire and her dam was "Pacolet's Deslry Triumph." Th...

I can see how you are getting your fun Ezzy and good for you, long may you enjoy it! :) For me part of the fun lies in the continuation of the dog work after the point. I like to see the dog move in to produce, I like to see my training take effect as the dog makes no attempt to snatch the bird on t...

Thanks Larue, I enjoyed the little video, though I live in Scotland it doesn't snow as much here as many people think. Only rarely do my dogs have to work in any real depth of snow. It was good to see yours do it. Sorry I can't send a film in, I haven't got the equipment or the technical know- how. ...

Different ways of doing things suit different people. I am sorry but I have to disagree with Ezzy about who should do the flushing of a pointed bird. I think the dog should do this but I fully accept that most of you will not agree. My reasons for thinking the dog should do it are as follows. The do...

Hi Helen, thanks for the welcome. In reply to your questions. (1) My name is Bill (2) H.P.R. can mean two things depending on the context. (a) It means Hunt-Point-Retriever - any and all of the breeds that are bred for this purpose such as Brits or G.S.P.'s. It excludes pointers and setters which ce...

Thankyou Karen, Before I ask my next question I would like to make it clear I am not trying to criticize your ways of working, only to understand them a bit better. So here's my next question, why does the handler flush the bird? The dog knows where it is and how far in front, it can make a better j...

Thankyou Helen, that's not too different from our H.P.R. trials then ? In this country the dog must always flush the bird on command or it will be downmarked in a trial. I'd read somewhere that in your country the handler or some other appointed person does the flushing in trials - is that not true?...

Yes, that's about right, we call your kind of shooting or hunting, rough shooting. The other two kinds of shooting here are wildfowling, which is shooting ducks and geese along the shorelines and estuaries and driven shooting. I've done driven shooting but only as a guest, it is by far the most expe...

I'm a newcomer to the forum from Scotland. I just don't understand this discussion. What do you mean by "cover?" It isn't usual here to work either pointers or setters in cover. That job is done by spaniels or H.P.R.'s . I ran my half American bred Brittany in her first ever trial in thick woodlands...

Hi, I'm new to the forum, hope it's O.K. to chuck in my tuppence worth. I can't help with weather advice as it applies to bird dog breeds, where I live it can rain, snow, sun all on the same day and it often does - Scotland's a funny place to work dogs! I can hardly believe your low prices for very ...

Hi, I'm a member of a couple of forums in Britain and have noticed trainers from your side of the pond asking questions about how we do things here. I hope you don't mind if I return the compliment and ask questions about how you do things. Some or maybe even most of your terminology will be unfamil...
