Basically the dog has to point a bird for 3 seconds. They have to have some training like range and they have to find the bird in the field. Finding a bird in a JH is not usually that hard. And they don't have to be trained very well but it shows the dog will find a bird and point it. SH is a very l...

Higgins is right on the money. I would not be shooting yet cause you will take the chance of scaring the pup. Wait until it builds confidence before shooting. Using some chipped wing birds maybe the perfect solution. Throw the clipped wing bird, release your dog and let it get some birds and kill th...

DK, DD, Shorthair, wirehair, german or american, fench or american, This all sounds very familar. Oh and the black disqualification also. People can say the german dogs are different than ours also but they are all different and breeding is what makes them more different. They are still the same bre...

I would give a pup to a good friend because I will be able to see what this pup turns out like without raising it myself. Best of both worlds. But I would never give a pup to someone who I did not know extremely well. Like was said the whole I paid nothing so it's worth nothing to me. I don't mind a...

Psittacosis is a rare disease in pigeons but can kill people and it is reportable to the CDC. If you took a pigeon to the vet and it was positive for this you would be force to eliminate the disease. Pigeons can carry 100 diseases but the chances of getting them and it accually hurting you are rare.

They can have diseases but it is rare. As was said wash your hands and you will be alright. The poeple who get stuff from these wild birds are mostly not cleaning up after handling them and eating afterwards. If your wife is really conserned get rid of those wild ones then spray down your loft with ...

Sometimes they are very tired and looking for a place to hang out for a couple days (get food and water). If they don't leave on their own in a few days you could take them and let them go somewhere else (at least 10 miles away) and they will probably go home then. If they decide not to then you cou...

I use baking pans. Put it down for 10 min. then pick it up. I give fresh water daily. I would try to do this always. I use rubber bowls to break the ice out easily. Pigeons are very tough I once left a pigeon in a cage for 6 days cause it was under some straw and I did not see it until the next week...

It is a Hoatzin. They are from south america and the amazon. It is a real bird believe it or not. It eat only leaves and has a gut like a cow. This is normal. If the dog catches birds it will remember it for a long time. Once your dog is just dead broke it won't happen. My finished dog would just keep pointing and relocating and would never take the bird out in that situation. If you run HT's you learn to train for stuff like this cause it...

Those white dogs are easier to see and especially when they are 500 yards away and running down the next fence row you need that. It is all that pointer that is bred into them. P.S. You are right about the dogs changing but alot of people like it. I firmly believe you can make those big runners hunt close all the time if that is what you want. Then you have a closer working dog that just works harder and covers more ground. If you don't like the FT lines of today just buy dogs ...

I was not really talking about trialing. Let say you are going to hunt a field and it is corn stuble and the whole field is surounded by fence rows/waterways (I just got back from Iowa and most fields are like this). Where are you going to shoot your birds? Let just say I wish I had a 4-wheeler or a...

The cover would make a great difference in if your dog would cover a square mile in a hour. If it was thick no but around here where I live we hunt ditches and fence rows and you can easily cover a mile in a hour. Ft's are not about covering the whole ground anyway it is about hitting the spot the b...

It would be enough room. The wings would stay strong when they are out flying. Most people use a bob trap. Like this. Scrol down and look at the one that says Heavy Duty Traps.

New pigeon loft.
Here is some pics of some of my lofts the newest is the large one. It strictly a flight loft as you can tell by the perch style. I have not made the trap for it yet. Besides these pictured here I have anouther one like the small ones here and a 8x16 loft. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a223/crazy...
