Re: NY Grouse Opener Tomorrow

Just got in from a quicky at my place. Mauser locked up on the edge of a trail pretty close to my Johnny House. I walked in, expecting a stray quail, and a grouse went up 40 yards away! It was in so thick I barely got a glimpse at it.I should have given it the 16ga salute just for Mauser, but I didn...

Re: NY Grouse Opener Tomorrow

Mauser and I hit "The Saddles State Forest" just south of Whitehall on Sunday. It had been cut several years ago, but not that hard. Most of the edge were skidder trails, but there were open areas where several trees were cut in proximity to others. There wasn't much low cover, or food, other than a...

Re: NY Grouse Opener Tomorrow

Mauser and I got our first fall grouse on the first outing on our property. It was the only bird we sniffed that day, but it was only a quick after-work jaunt. At just one year old, Mauser handled it perfectly. Pointed at first scent @25 yards, and was steady to flush. Puppiness took over when he sa...

Re: e-collar and bird launcher

Hi Daniel, I have a Pro 550, and it's great. I would recommend it. I also have a Dogtra remote launcher and a Higgins remote release. I use them together or singly. I get more use out of the Higgins release because I can open it ahead of time and pay attention to Mauser instead of the remote. If he ...

Re: Pointer Pups Learning to Hunt

Beautiful! There is nothing better than to observe young pups during these first experiences in the field! It's amazing how they exhibit complete focus and learn very quickly when free from command and control. Owners do this with their little pups at first, and then - despite the obvious success - ...

I agree Trekmor. Mauser and I will develop to work as a team, using all options available, with the goal of getting the bird.

X2 on Schnee's Boots. I will never wear any other brand. After coming in from a long day afield, I forget to take them off because they're so comfy.

Re: Video: Pointer Cued to Flush the Bird Then STF

That's awesome Brad. My first GSP and I used that method together (it just became a organic routine) which resulted in a severe decline of the ruffed grouse population. Luger was extremely smart, and learned to position himself to direct the birds he flushed towards me, as well. I shot many grouse a...

Re: I've lost my pointer!

That's funny! Don't worry - your pup is wired for birds! I take my pup out for the long walk thru the woods to the Johnny House (otherwise he'll go into ballistic whining), He jumps at the quail on the upper screened perch and doesn't want to leave when I'm done feeding and watering them. It's has o...

Re: Releasing only one sex from JH to ensure Recall

I release my quail by opening the top door and letting several fly out, without controlling the sex. As long as the birds have been in there for several days, they all usually come back. That may because of the cold season, and food is plentiful in the JH though. Birds that are released shortly afte...

Re: Observations?

Thank you everyone. I appreciate the feedback. I have a remote Dogtra launcher and Higgins release cage with a Dogtra receiver. I will be using both in series later on to steady him up upon scent. Opening the Higgins after the 1st bird is launched will allow him to learn that he might bust another b...

Re: Help me find a BOOT

Try Schnee's Boots out of Bozeman, Montana. They are comfortable, waterproof, durable and....well....expensive. But you get what you pay for. Mine are 4 years old, and have been beat on from elk hunting in Colorado to bird hunting in the Northeast without a leak.

Observations?

I've used a modified version the Higgins method of "The Magic Brushpile", replacing the brushpile with magic hay bales, springing and live-shooting the bird. The theory remains the same. After two birds, Mauser caught on to the program. Before using the method, he was beating me to the bird. Now, wh...

Re: Do recall pens for quail really work

I recently built a Johnny House out of 2x2 PT, plywood, hardware cloth and polycarbonate roofing. I used a modular construction, and it is entirely study and sufficient. I got 2 dozen quail last week, and of the 5 I released on day 2, 2 came back. One succumbed to puppy enthusiasm. Of the 7 I releas...

Re: A little about you...

Hi everyone! I'm 53, male, and married with no kids. I've worked for NYSDEC for 27 years. We own a 550-acre farm property which supports my neighbor's dairy farm, and I have a private preserve license for it, to be able to release birds. Our dogs are our kids, and we just got a new one. In September...
