I use pigeons in the beginning simply due to cost savings. Re-use the same birds over and over. You can also re-use quail with recall, but I think homing pigeons come back better than quail do. Once I have a dog ready to shoot birds, I switch to quail. I am sure lot's of folks do it lot's of differe...

I can tell you that with grain prices especially corn being up like they are that you can expect bird prices to rise this fall. I raise a few quail and pheasant. Granted, it is a smaller operation. I can't afford to sell quail for less than $4, and we usually get $5. On pheasants, we usually get $10...

I think 5 weeks is too young. The idea is to rear them until they are fully feathered and can live in your climate without a heat lamp. For my part of the USA, which is northern Ohio, it seems like 8 weeks is the right age. It's nice to if he could create some safe havens for them. Take an old roll ...

My advice on raising pheasants is don't do it to make money.

They eat a ton and people look at you funny when you ask for 10 bucks a piece. They eat darn near 10 bucks a piece in feed on there way to adult hood.

I recommend quail or pigeons for dog training purposes.

If you try to put in more quail than the building will hold, you will lose quail accordingly. For instance, 10x10 building is good for 100 quail. If you put 150 in there, the problem will work itself out until you have 100 or less.

My pup Brutus earned his final leg of JH today. He did a nice job during the entire process. He ran earlier this month at age 6 months, 1 day for his first leg. Today, 6/24, he is JH and still 1 week before he turns 7 months old... Proud papa... Maybe he will be ready this fall or next spring for SH.

Shine big bright light in their eyes, and net them like a fish. If they are in reach should be no problem. If they are out of reach, bring a net with a long pole attached.
