Top picks on equipment
What is at the top of your list for the best piece of training equipment you ever bought or made? The item(s) you feel were worth every penny and you would buy again in a quik minute. For me it's got to be the bird hoses: tethers made from a 1' piece of rubber hose with a weight in one end and a pie...

They have been sync'd for the last 3 cycles. It's weird. I know it's coming, so I watch for the signs. It seems to take them a little longer than the traditional "6-months" for them to start but eventually one will get started. The usually within a couple of days of the first dog to come in heat, th...

Is there a safe way to expedite a female's cycle?
I had a plan! I prefer female dogs for some reason, so I thought if I had more than one female I would always have onewho wasn't in heat. Well, I have three female GWPs now and guess what - they have all syncronized their cycles. So now I have three times the "HEAT" The male dogs in my neighborhood ...

NAVHDA UT Duck search-help?
OK, I ran my 4.5 Yr GWP in UT today. She was fantastic in everything but the duck search. She got a 2 in duck search because she came back to heel and had to be re-sent twice. the seacrch itself was very good, but she returns to be redirected if she isn't successful after a few minutes. She has bee...

I am trying to get things lined up for running my dog in a NAVHDA NA test. I assume I have to be a member of NAVADA (entry form asks for my member number), and I also need to have my dog registered with NAVHDA? Once those two things are done then I can fill out and turn in the entry form for the te...

There is not a connection. The local animal shelters are self-funded, such as our Hennepin County Humane Society (Mpls. area). HSUS co-opted the word "Humane" in order to dupe people into believing they were contributing to the shelter system. That's what I thought. I just haven't done the research...

Don't get too hung-up on caliber. Handguns, as a rule, are not good man stoppers! Ask any officer who has had a shoot-out with a meth-head. Get something you can shoot comfortably and accurately. You need to be able to hit center-of-mass consistently out to about 10-15 yards. Though you may (hopeful...

Sam tends to hunt in closer in heavy cover but she still covers lots of groud in open country. I think training and the dog's personality have more to do with how close a dog hunts than the breed. Your dog should want to work with you in the field and keep track of you just like you keep track of him.

How much space should be between kennel & bird pens?
How far away from a dog's kennel should the bird pen be? I'm concerned about building them too close together, space is an issue though. I know one trainer who keeps his training birds just a few feet from the kennels and doesn't worry about it. The dogs can't see the birds, but I'm sure they can s...
