The neighbors dog was (they finally put him down last night) was a mixed breed but it had some northern timber wolf in it... The dog was already registered as an aggressive dog from the last encounter. Atleast my dogs are safe in their own yard now. I remember when that happened! I'm really surpris...

vince it was nice meeting you.... did you eventually put your pup ona bird that day? Yes, I did! Someone (another Vizsla guy, forgot his name) was kind enough to take the pup & me over to the adjacent field & planted a pigeon for us. What kind of dog do you have? I met alot of people that day & am ...

Visla Vince, did you go to the session at the seneca hunt club? If you did, tell me about how it went. I'll probably be at the next one in sept. Joe Yes, I did. I can't really tell you if it was a good day all around ( nothing to compare it to), but it was a neat experience for the pup & me. I don'...

Re: Kansas with a pointing dog?
My other problem is I hunt with family members who use close ranging flushers and they think my dog is a runaway at 30 yards  . I think you need to find a polite way to tell your hunting buddies to shut the heck up & let YOU run YOUR dog. Perhaps you should advise them on exactly how they nee...

Has anyone ever used these? I know Rick Smith is endorsing them ( for what it's worth). Are they any good?

99 degrees w/ 114 on the heat index today! The wife called me at work (while on the roof) & asked me when I was gonna run the pup @ the forest preserve. He's been bouncing off the walls. Its been like this for 4 days! Of course, when I go to let the pup outside, he looks at me like "You're kidding, ...

Now the question that is in no way meant in any other way than to help me understand. Why the heck are there so many crates being used to house so many dogs? Why are they sleeping in crates? Why are they spending time in crates during the day when owner is gone? If the dog is part of the family and...

My neighbor has one that is... ahem..... "95% Wolf, 5% Shepherd". It's huge, shy and cautious........... Not a whole lot of domestic in there if you ask me........, buttttt there is no law against it and I for one, won't promote a law against it. I value my freedoms to highly. Unfortuneately, stori...

fdsjr, The main point is to keep it fun! I work with Zoomie & his stuffed pheasant or duck. He loves to carry his toys around, & I'll take one from him while he's on the couch with me, throw it across the room, saying "fetch". He then picks it up, & returns to the couch where he was sitting, (& wher...

Last season, I went pheasant hunting with my father-in-law behind his Pudelpointer @ Green River, Il. Not alot of birds that day, but I'll never forget mine! My fil had already bagged a rooster that practically jumped down the barrel of his gun, & his pp flushed another way out of range, I made note...

First water retrieve!
I had Zoomie @ the fp today, & we were playing in the creek. Just for grins, I grabbed a stick, threw it across the creek, & said "fetch". Without hesitation, he ran/swam after the stick, gently picked it out of the water, & swam back to me! Mind you, I've only been "fun fetching" with him around th...

Vince....Just something you might want to keep in mind in situations like that, especially at a young age. At that age he brings it back to you as a "trophy" of sorts. He might even do a little "parade" with it before getting back to you. It sometimes is better to not take the bird from your pup. L...

Is the dog a perfect retriever? If not I believe giving the bird back is not a bad idea. I do it all the time with pigeons. It encourages the dog to fetch it to you. I would have done the same thing you did. My thinking behind giving the bird back is if the dog thinks he can give you the bird and g...

Now, this may just be newbie idiocy, but I take Zoomie to the do-it-yourself range all the time. Mind you, I made sure he wasn't gunshy before I did. Zoomie isn't phased by this in the least. He doesn't hide, in fact if he wasn't tethered, he'd probably chase the clays. Alot of the time, he'll loung...

He caught a bird!
Last week, Zoomie(6 mos old) & I were afield, & he caught a young kildeer! I didn't know how to react! I didn't scold him, but I didn;t make a huge deal out of it. I managed to get it from him w/out any fight, & he kept wanting it back. I gave it back a couple of times, just to make sure I could get...

Tail docking question
Why are diffferent breeds' tails docked @ different lengths?
My V's are docked 1/3 to 1/2 length, gsp's are docked 3/4?, & britts are left w/ tiny little nubs.
Is this for looks, or is there a method to this madness?

My two dogs represent the two different kinds of "pullers". My Vizsla starts off with the acceleration of a moped, gets into a nice even trot and stays there. If something happens, I have time to react. My GSP starts off, and can call on at any time, the acceleration of a rocket sled. He keeps it u...

I got my pup into the water by the "stream" nethod. The first & second time, I walked in alone, & put no pressure to make him follow. The next time, I crossed the stream, & called him to me.
