I want to add something to Wyndancer's reply. Remember, the gunner is an extension of you. I know, easier said then done. After screwing up by listening to a gunner last weekend, I re-learned this lesson the hard way. I agree with phermes1. There are judges that will fail you because any movement is...

Interesting discussion. I was having the same talk with the breeder of my dogs the other day. One dog is motivated by approval. Sound strange? For example, during his breaking phase, when he did everything correctly, he knew it and insisted on getting approval through kissing my face... Ya dog germs...

Announcing a new Dual Champion. DC Onpoint's Tuff Act To Beat "Toby" won the OLGD (ret) stake at the Tampa Bay Vizsla Club field trial last weekend giving him his final retrieving point needed for his FC. Owned, trained and handled by myself. Toby completed his show CHampionship last July show by Pa...

I have to share this. Last weekend my baby gun dog (just 2 years old) Onpoint's Full Throttle "Tagg" placed twice at the Mid FLorida Brittany Trail in Masarkytown FL. 4th in AGD and 2nd in OGD. Not bad for his first official runs with the big dogs. Tagg is pictured here. Taken last summer in a train...

Justin,
I use "Neck Ties" from www.horse.com. My local feed store put a brass plate with my name and cell number on it in case one of my knuckle heads gets loose.

Theresa, It has been my experiance that regardless of the field drive or bred intentions, a vizsla is a high energy dog. Just because it has no bird sense, it doesn't mean it will be a couch potatoe. My first v had zero bird interest until she was about 2 years old. She was still very much a vizsla ...

It is with great pleasure that I announce that my dog Onpoint's Tuff Act To Beat "Toby" has earned his Championship title. He finished over the weekend in Sarasota Florida professionally handled by Patrick Thomas of Ft. Myers FL. If you show your field trial dogs, you may have run into the same situ...

I TRY to do it every fall. Look at it this way... It is one more tool in your dog's mind to keep him safe. Downside is.... temporary fear of hoses and sticks. Upside is... Scent related danger signal... and of course.. the expressing of anal glands when the collar "bites" them. It is not a sure proo...

It depends on the stage of the dog. For fresh, green dogs, I plant hard, asleep, head tucked. I try to plant so the dog has a tree behind him that a check cord can be wrapped around. I usually train alone and this helps let me get in front of the dog with some control over the check cord. I always t...

If you go to AKC's homepage and click on "breeds" and then pull up the drop down menu "English Pointer" isn't an option but "pointer" is. I must guess then that "pointer" refers to an english pointer. The name of the breed is "pointer." Some people feel a need to add "English" to it, but it is not ...

DoubleB20, This is how I handled a similar situation. I have a young vizsla that when he is excited, he is a jumping bean. If anyone judges, the Oregon Brittany Club used to give the judges really great score books. Kept up, everything you watched, even the boring, was recallable later. Wish I still had one of those too. The best advice that I've heard was that if they need the derby points to finish, they wouldn't finish anyway. Greg, I agree completely with your statement but I also believe there is a value in running a derby past earning his points. Puppy/Derby time is a time to learn how to handle. It creates a...
