Re: At what age does point appear?
As soon as the puppies have had their first vaccine I take them out to look for signs of interest in bird smells. Sometimes I only have a wing available other times I have live quail available. Puppies have been using their noses from the time of birth. The pointing instinct comes about shortly afte...

Mark I was running her on pigeons. It was a goodflyer. However, because of wanting to hide trap so that Patch could not see it I put it in heavy cover. The cover was dence and tall. The bird got tangled in grass before it could get flying. Because of the flight path (or lack there of) the check cord...

Just a stab at an answer. I believe you need a database of at least 10 generations of pedigree plus a special program that generates these numbers. Also if you have further generational depth information it leads to a more significantly reliable number.

Gertie - I agree that the Migratory Bird Treaty Act has been around since 1918 and is in control on this subject. I once had a GSP that would flush on command. Only worked on this AFTER the dog understood find the bird and point until I released. At that point it becomes the same training used for flushing dogs where they hup (stop and sit) at the flush. The purests thinks a pointing dog should never be used to...
