Re: Vizsla training - with or without ecollar

Vman - You are correct in assuming I've not experienced this breed. I also do not own a training collar. I've seen how smart these dogs can be and also talked to breeders that don't believe you need a training collar for the Vizslas. If I don't need to spend money on a collar, then I don't want to. ...

Re: GSP and Setter eating poop

I had a GSP that started eating his own poop as well as the poop of the in-house dog when I changed to a different dog food. In seeking advice, I was told to check the protein content between the two foods. I had gone from a 16% protein to 18%. I cut off the high protein food and went back down to 1...

Vizsla training - with or without ecollar

I'm on my second week with a Vizsla. Right now, I'm just trying to get acquainted with her and let her learn her new environment. I have a question for those who train Vizslas. Do you use the ecollar in their training? I know these are sensitive dogs and I've heard from some people that say an ecoll...

Dr. Dodd was attributed in the podcast as being one of the lead researchers on this topic. It's definitely interesting and I'm sure there are many schools of thought just as there are for childhood vaccinations.

2006 American Animal Hospital Assoc. Vaccine Guidelines

I just heard a podcast about the 2006 AAHA cannine vaccine guidelines. The guideline that I'm interested in specifically has to do with time between vaccinations. I'm sure most of us typically vaccinate annually or tri-annually. The AAHA guidelines suggest the vaccinations are effetive in the dog fo...

Re: GSP between legs upon gun shot

I don't think the original owner omitted any facts. I'm confident he did very little to train this dog to hunt. He said the dog had been shot over but I now believe it wasn't in a hunting situation with 12 ga shotguns. Now that I think about it...the previous owner may have kept the dog at his side ...

Re: Kansas non-resident license question

Kansas allows you to purchase an "apprentice" non-resident license for your first year. This license allows you to hunt in Kansas without taking the hunter safety course first; however, you must hunt with a properly licensed hunter. For instance, my brother-in-law does not meet the qualifications to...

GSP between legs upon gun shot

Took my new 3-yr-old out for the first time last weekend. Original owner said he was trained and had been shot over and he showed promise during the off season. I did notice one thing that I can't decide what to think of it. When I would shoot at a bird, he'd come running back and stand behind me or...

He was gagging on his food from eating too fast. I've reduced to two feeds per day, morning and evening. He also took care of the bark collar question. I found it in his dog house last night in pieces. I don't know why I even have one for him. He doesn't hold a candle to my neighbor's four dogs when...

Vomiting during feeding

My nearly two-year-old male GSP has started to vomit a couple minutes into his feeding. I feed once per day in the evening and it's usually about 3 cups at each feeding. To my knowledge, he hasn't gotten into anything. His heaving is so violent that it activates his bark collar. That's the only coll...

I hunted in the Greensburg area last season and came across some quail. There is a lot of cover for them in the Pratt, Haviland, Greensburg area. There's also a lot of walk-in. Most of the walk-in that I saw would require several guys and/or a dog. I didn't see much quail cover on the walk-in that I...

Re: side by side...what brand/model do you shoot?

I shoot an old Savage-Fox Model B-SE. I like it because it is light in the field, swings with ease and is easy to maintain. I think you can pick one up for $300-$500. It was a hand-me-down from my Dad and I've had it for 15 years or so. I'm not sure what year it was made, but I'm guessing in the 70s...

I've been emailing with Ms. Bender and it's been a great conversation. I'd almost rather invest in a "show" gun and have her work on that. Knowing the ...

I think my GSPs behavior changes are based on the weather. Yesterday morning it was 70 degrees, but dropped to 40 degrees by 5 p.m. I went out to feed him in the evening and I couldn't get the food in the dish fast enough. He devoured it. Same thing this morning at 33 degrees.

Somewhere I saw plans for a doggie septic system. Try searching for something like that. You'd probably have to build a kennel with a concrete pad and then have the pad drain into the septic system. Let us know if you find something that works.

I have a Savage Fox Model B SxS that I love to shoot with. Unfortunately, I was shooting clay about a month ago and broke the rear stock. I had some old 5s that I wanted to get rid of and a box of those cracked the stock near the tang. So, I'm in the market for a new stock for this gun.

I've seen owners keep them on their dogs 24x7, along with a bark collar. I don't own an e-collar yet and have only begun my training, so there is little need for one at this point. So, the answer to your question is, "no."

Frankly, I think keeping the e-collar on 24x7 shows a lazy owner/trainer.
