If you hunt by yourself than wing and shot is probably not needed, but hunting with others makes it a must in my opinion. You will always have the saftey of your dog in mine, others often seem to have the bird and the shot in mind more than the location of your dog. JMO

AZsetter, is the small setter you're talking about a 28 lb white female from Suncanyon setters? If so I would bet Paul will show you the dog on birds or pehaps do the youtube thing. I talked to him about the dog and was very intrigued as a hunting dog, just poor timing for me.

slistoe, a little touchy aren't you? why are you guys so bothered by someone stating an observation from the field? Why would anyone want him banned? I agree with some of what Z says, I have hunted my dog with FT dogs and been amazed at how far those dogs hunted ahead of my dog and shocked at how many birds were shot over my dog behind these dogs that are FT winning dogs. To each his own.

I own many guns and I have found that I almost always grab the cheapest gun I own when I'm in the field ( stoeger o/u ). I was the one who brought up backyard breeders, probably a poor choice of words. So true, if people would pay may more attention to breeding and then put their dog in the hands of a pro for training we would see a lot less of those poor dogs you speak of. I see more back yard breeders with britts than Pointers, setters and gsp's.

I could say the same thing about gsp's, pointers and setters. The truth is there are great hunters in every breed and also some dogs that just aren't very good. I've seen brittany's out hunt the other breeds, just depends on the dog and your preference.
