We had our clinic when my pup was 8 months and I elected to wait till next year for all the same reasons. Better to wait then to push to hard to soon.

IMO if you cant spend on one dont get one. I also would not use the paper as your only source for nailing down a breeder. If you want the pup to hunt then you have to find a good breeder with solid history of producing hunting pups.

I think we may need some more info. My first thought was what have you done to teach the pup that there is nothing more fun then finding birds. He may be following scent because it is an interesting scent and not because it is a bird. More info on prior training.

When my girl was 3 months old I took her roller blading just trying to tire her out. HA, HA, HA, that was 45 mins. of her pulling me on my blades. When we got home she looked at me wondering when I was going to go excersive her. A normal workout for a birddog would probally make a coach dog lame.

I positioned it on the fence about half way up the fence. Then I had the distance set so it would start beeping when she walked within a couple feet of the fence. It stopped the jumping and it also stopped the barking at the fence when the neighbor was out in the back yard.

If I were in your situation I would look for a good trainer in your area and go spend a few hours or a few sessions with them. Let them evaulate exactly were the dog is at and what the dog needs. I researched PP's for a long time and was stuck on having one. In the end I also ended up with a GSP. Just to put another feathe in Bob's hat, most every other PP breeder started with Cederwoods stock. That is why I was going to buy one from him.

I feed diamond and started it because that was what my breeder feed. I really like the food and it is priced great. The stoles could be smaller but thats ok with me. If you look at the ingredients you will have to pay alot more to get the same at a big box store.

Just dont put him in a situation where he gets whacked with a wing and gets scared of birds. Just keep it fun and hold the bird at a distance at first to build the prey drive before you let him wrestle with one.

I agree with the direction that everyone else is going. IMO you need to get to a trainer for an eval. You havn't said anything that stands out to me as a deal breaker. ohiogsp nailed it. Get your launcher out and put the dog on the launcher as soon as the dog sits pop the launcher. It wont take to many times and the dog will figure it out.

You will be fine if you just follow the perfect start video. The one that needs some prey drive do as mentioned above. My pup didn't have amazing drive out of the box and I let her play with a bird. You cant hold her back in the field now.

My pup ate like this as well when she first came home. She stopped eating like she was starving to death at around 3 months old. Now she takes her time and even leaves food at most feedings. I was worried about bloat, but I was glad to see her change her feeding style.

I am sure you can find out fairly quickly if the pup can make it as a bird dog. My guess would be yes? I would start with him as if he was a pup. Get him some birds to play with and build the desire. I am fairly new to this as well. But you will certainly get more responses then just mine.

That was the first time seing a pointing lab work, that dog was great. After planting birds it took jake about 15 seconds to be on the first bird. Our weather has been crazy here in Colorado. I am might be switching to performance soon. My pup has stopped eating well. She is leaving half her food at each feeding. I used to have to try and slow her down she ate so fast.

Why do you want to switch? If you switch and the dogs dont burn off the extra pile of calories they might put on extra weight. We had a small dog spayed about 3 years ago I think it was $135. When I get my gsp spayed in a year I will probally pay around $150-$175. More important then the cost is making sure you trust the Doc. I would pay twice that if that is what my vet charged, because I trust him.
