Re: Russian Baikal O/U's
I bought a IZH 43 about five years ago...a 28 gauge sxs. Thinned down the wrist...made the pistol grip into a straight grip...sanded it all, and applied Watco's Danish finnish oil...ended up with this. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y192/ccavacini/Hunting/Picture135-1.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com...

Re: Hunting in Indiana
The best pheasant hunting is in our Western counties--Benton, Newton, Warren. Also, probably the hardest to find land to hunt. It's farmed from road to road, but where there is cover, there are birds. You can find quail in the Southwest counties--Knox, Daviess,Sullivan and also some Southeast counti...

I think if you find a Browning BSS 20, you would be satisfied.

And, most importantly, you'll look better carrying a sxs than any other shotgun.

Re: 28 guage makers.
I have a Baikal IZH 43 (Remington Spartan)--SxS in 28 gauge. Fun litle gun. Use it on wild quail and pen raised pheasant. Fixed chokes Im/Mod. Got for under 300 a couple of years ago.
Re: Brittanys
Not sure I can add anymore to what's been said. I have two Brittanys and a Lab. They all shed, but it's never bothered me. They're great house/hunting/companion dogs.

Always wondered why 28 gauge doesn't bother with 3" chambers/shells. I believe it's the only gauge.

Quail, wrapped in bacon, over an open fire, on a Texas Quail hunting trip. Camping out, sipping some fine Vodka...can't get much better.

Re: brittany or english setter
A lot of good thoughts on these posts....I'm partial to Brittanys (have two 9 and 2). Do love the style of the Setters.
Both offer a lot of dog/owner bonding (picking out burrs).

I've done two stocks....use Homer Formsbey to get off old coat...light rubbing with fine steel wool with acetone...and finish with Watco's Danish finish oil....hand rubbed until the stock wouldn't take any more. The finish oil brought out the grain. I know a lot of guys use Truoil...been happy with ...

My second Brittany was the runt of the litter...10 dogs, 7 females, 3 males. Her momma wasn't too big..probably around 30lbs. She's almost 2 and weighs 23 lbs. She's like a fart in a hot skillet and will turn out to be a fine bird dog. The breeder I got her from in Iowa names his dogs before they go...

Re: Young dog training/question
Hello everyone, I am new to training and have a 9 month old GSP. I introduced him to birds at 3 months and fired a 22 blank while he chased live birds. He didn't seem to be shy at all. Then at about 8 months I started planting quail and having him find them. His point is awesome but when the bird f...

What you're going to do sounds good. I'm in a similar situation as I'm driving 12 hours to bring my pup home in June. The crate thing is great...don't forget laps....On a long drive, let the pup sit on someone's lap for awhile to be petted. If your kids are old enough, let the pup sit on their laps ...

Here's something you can pretty much count on: In warm weather, pheasant will run (both hens and roosters). In cold weather, both will sit tighter and thus hold better for a pointing dog. One of the biggest problems for a pointing dog (as this is what I hunt with) is getting on a fresh trail of a ru...
