Re: But wait ... what would you pay?

Paying to hunt is growing and here to stay. It's the future, but I'm glad I've been able to enjoy a lot without paying. If you really do your homework free hunting is still available, but it's sure not easy to find. As far as the Texas comments, when the conditions are right there are more numbers t...

If you milo the roads in areas that are not so thick you would probably get good dog work.

Once you bust the covey they will hold much better.

Re: Wild blue quail vs released bobwhites

Wild blues are tough but with experience he will get better. Pen raised birds, in my opinion, will never teach a dog as well as wild.
I love wild blues but they are gangsters compared to wild gentlemen bobs.

Good luck.

I agree with being quiet and letting him hunt, but I would not let him run around by himself.

Wild birds will teach him but I wouldn't let them do it unless I was there with him.

Years ago a friend and I shot a few rabbits while hunting quail with a Britt I had at the time (Best dog I've ever had). We did not shoot any of the rabbits in front of him. Where I hunt in SE Kansas coyotes are hunted a lot with greyhounds. The hunters split up in trucks around a section of land and communicate over CB's. The dogs are in a box on the back of a modified flatbed with a seperation in the center. Dogs on each side can stick there heads out to see into the ...

My buddy has a Pointer that will ground trail a running covey of quail from the upwind side. He will keep looking ahead for a place to make his move. When he sees a place where he can make a fast circle to the front he will bolt out, then come in from the downwind side and pin the birds. It is a sig...

I love my Filson vest. Very comfortable and you don't lose shells with the deep pockets.

I have worn them out though, both the vest and the chaps. I don't think they are as tough as they were many years ago, they seem to get torn easier on barbed wire now. But I still like them.
