usually I give my girl a treat before I go deer hunting, poor girl thinks everytime I put camo on or just open the gun locker that she is going hunting. If i bring a deer home I let her sniff it up real good, let her think I got it for her, and usually shes happy with that.

I would take what was said one step further, the very site of a gun (like he said) could probably scare the dog. I know I would get my dog excited just seeing a gun, letting her know its a good thing, by taking her in the back yard and shooting a BB gun (one that looks similar to a shotgun NOT A PIS...

I lost my dog once, she actually figured her way back to the pasture where I normally park my truck to hunt ( i guess she recognized the area and some familiar smells) that pasture was 5 miles from where we lost her. I was amazed, and so happy when I saw her.

I agree wholeheartedly with Greg. A couple squirts of Rem Oil and a swipe or two with the bore snake should be all you need to do after most outings. If the gun gets really dirty, though, go with the solvent (I like Hoppes #9 or Gun Scrubber) on a patch until clean, followed by a swipe with Rem Oil...
